Internal communication reveals serious flaws in Fiat Toro 2.0 diesel vehicles that led to a drastic decision by mining company Vale.

Mining company Vale has announced the definitive ban of the Fiat Toro 2.0 diesel from its vehicle fleet. The decision was motivated by recurring problems with the engine suddenly shutting down while the pickup was in motion, a situation that represented a significant risk to the safety of the company's operations and employees. The information came to light after an internal communication from the mining company.

With a fleet of over 3.000 vehicles, including pickup trucks, utility vehicles and passenger cars, mining company Vale highlighted in the document that several measures had been attempted to mitigate the problem. However, shutdowns continued to occur, including within mines where operations require maximum safety. The statement also highlights the lack of formal technical feedback from the automaker, even after repeated attempts to contact it.

“Vale adopts strict fleet control and management measures to minimize potential risks. People’s safety is the company’s top priority,” the mining company said in an official statement. In addition to replacing all diesel Fiat Toro 4x4s in use, the company has also decided to prevent new vehicles of this model from being added to its fleet, even when they come from rental companies.

The other side of the issue: Stellantis' response

After the problems at Vale, the Quatro Rodas website contacted Stellantis, the manufacturer of the Fiat Toro, which admitted to having analyzed some of the problematic units and stated that mineral contamination in the diesel was one of the potential causes of the failures. The company also pointed out changes in the original characteristics of the vehicles, such as the use of non-genuine parts and damage to the fuel tank nozzle.

One specific case revealed the improper use of diesel in the ARLA 32 tank, an essential fluid for reducing pollutant emissions in diesel vehicles. This behavior, according to Stellantis, may have aggravated the mechanical problems.

“All of these elements directly or indirectly influence the proper functioning of the vehicles, and may cause the inconveniences reported in the mining company’s statement. Stellantis remains available to contribute to the best use of the product,” the company stated.

Safety first

Mining company Vale's decision to ban the Fiat Toro 2.0 diesel reinforces its commitment to worker safety and risk mitigation in highly complex operations. Even though it is a widely used model in the market, the problems reported by the company highlight the importance of technical alignment between automakers and corporate customers, especially in such demanding operational contexts.

Meanwhile, the case also draws attention to the relationship between severe working conditions and vehicle durability, raising questions about how automakers and companies can work together to avoid similar situations in the future.

I have a 1 Toro Volcano diesel pickup truck. With 2021 thousand km it presented this same problem and the dealership never found out what it was. A very expensive car with no solution and they attributed it to contamination from Vale. But mine had all the revisions done and I only fill up at reliable stations. I already know of reports on the new rampage and the cost of the service is 50 thousand reais. In other words, they don't know what it is and condemn the engine. Disregard for the customer.

My Fiat Toro is Flex and had the same problem.
