The launch of the new Toyota Yaris Cross has stirred the Brazilian automotive market and put Toyota back in the center of discussions about electrified SUVs. The model arrives as the new car from Toyota to compete in the country’s most competitive segment, but public reception came with a mix of enthusiasm and surprise — mainly due to the price. Even with all the attention around the flex hybrid engine, what stood out the most was the high price and the early warning that the SUV will become even more expensive in 2026.

The brand opened pre-sales with 8,500 units and, so far, has not confirmed what the new price will be after this batch is sold out. In addition, deliveries will only start between February and March 2026.

The only certainty is that the official price will increase, positioning the model even higher than direct rivals such as Honda HR-V, Volkswagen Nivus, Nissan Kicks, and even basic medium SUVs like the Jeep Compass and the Corolla Cross.

And there’s another point that became a highlight: even with all the advertising around hybrid technology, the Yaris Cross did not earn the title of the cheapest hybrid in Brazil. The Omoda 5 HEV, priced at R$ 159,990, continues to hold that title, according to information from Chery Brasil.

High Price Now, Higher Price Later: The Bold Positioning from Toyota That Promises to Hit the Streets Only in February 2026

The Yaris Cross debuts with prices ranging from R$ 161,390 to R$ 189,990, but these figures are only valid during the pre-sale. After the first 8,500 units are delivered, Toyota will announce the final price — and, according to executives from the brand in an interview with Autoesporte, the trend is an increase.

This means that the model is starting off expensive and is likely to become even costlier going forward. With this move, Toyota makes it clear that it wants to position the SUV above traditional compact cars and bring it closer to more sophisticated options in the segment. The target, in practice, is much closer to the Honda HR-V and Nivus, as well as customers who currently consider medium SUVs like the Compass and the Corolla Cross.

Discreet Design, Medium SUV Size, and Total Focus on Urban Experience

The look of the new Toyota Yaris Cross follows the brand’s conservative style, with LED headlights and taillights, a hexagonal grille, and 17 or 18-inch wheels.

The size is a key point: with a length of 4.31 meters and a wheelbase of 2.62 meters, it dangerously approaches the Corolla Cross, delivering a larger presence than traditional compacts.

The interior mixes simplicity with elements that convey a sense of refinement, such as rubberized details, ambient lighting, and a partially padded dashboard.

The 10-inch multimedia center with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay works together with the 7-inch digital display to create the modern atmosphere that the segment demands.

The Most Anticipated Flex Hybrid in Brazil… But Not the Cheapest

The big differentiator of the Yaris Cross lies under the hood. The SUV debuts a new flex hybrid setup, developed especially for Brazil as part of Toyota’s strategy for accessible electrification.

The 1.5-liter aspirated engine works with two electric motors (MG1 and MG2), resulting in 111 hp of combined power, which is a modest number for the segment.

However, the fuel consumption is excellent. Official data from Inmetro shows:

  • 17.9 km/l in the city
  • 15.3 km/l on the highway

It’s one of the best performances among SUVs in Brazil, even outperforming some larger models from the same brand.

During a presentation to the press, Rafael Chang, president of Toyota Brazil, emphasized that the flex hybrid is the best-fit solution for the country, stating to Estadão Mobilidade: “Brazil has the perfect conditions to combine ethanol and electrification. The flex hybrid is a real way to reduce emissions without raising costs or limiting car usage.”

The only issue is that, despite being innovative, the Yaris Cross is not the cheapest hybrid on the market. The lead remains with the Omoda 5 HEV, which continues unbeatable at a price of R$ 159,990.

Toyota Prepares for a New Phase with Billion-Dollar Investments and a New Factory in Brazil

In addition to the launch, Toyota took the opportunity to reinforce its industrial plan in the country. The brand announced R$ 11.5 billion in investments by 2030, as reported on Toyota’s global portal. This amount will be used to develop new flex hybrids, expand production capacity, and create about 2,000 direct jobs.

One of the central points of the plan is the new factory in Sorocaba, expected to begin operations in the second half of 2026, with a production capacity of 100,000 vehicles per year. The resumption of production after the accident at the Porto Feliz plant was also updated: Sorocaba is already operating in three shifts and Indaiatuba in two, with complete normalization expected by March 2026.

This move shows that the Yaris Cross is not just a one-off launch; it is part of a much larger project to reinforce Toyota’s presence in Latin America.

A Promising, Modern, and Efficient SUV — But Expensive and with Uncertain Pricing

The new Toyota Yaris Cross arrives as one of the year’s most talked-about SUVs and promises to compete for an important space among those looking for hybrid technology, reduced consumption, and Toyota’s reliability. But it also comes with several warnings:

  • there is no confirmation of the new price after the pre-sale,
  • and the model will continue to be more expensive in 2026,
  • in addition to not surpassing the Omoda 5 HEV as the cheapest hybrid in the country.

Ia trocar o Tiggo 5x pró que faz 5,5 km/L, mas com a diferença de preço abasteço por vários anos, pq ando pouco.
