Largest Firearms Factory in Latin America, Taurus Produces 1.5 Million Units Per Year in RS and Exports to Over 40 Countries.
Few Brazilians have any idea of the size of the industrial complex that puts Brazil among the big names in the global arms industry. Located in São Leopoldo (RS), the headquarters of Taurus Armas S.A. occupies an area larger than 22,000 square meters and maintains an impressive production rate: over 1.5 million firearms per year, serving both the domestic market and over 40 countries around the world.
Founded in 1939, Taurus grew silently until it became the largest firearm manufacturer in Latin America and one of the 10 largest in the world, symbolizing precise engineering and Brazilian technology applied to defense and security.
A Factory That Never Stops: 24-Hour Operation
According to the Portal Defesa.Net, the São Leopoldo unit operates continuously, with thousands of employees working in alternating shifts to ensure that the production line does not stop.

Tourists were poisoned on Everest in a million-dollar fraud scheme involving helicopters that diverted over $19 million and shocked international authorities.
Every firearm goes through over 500 manufacturing stages, including machining, heat treatment, quality control, and final assembly.
To maintain constant production, Taurus invested in industrial automation and robotics. CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines are capable of operating with tolerances below 0.001 mm, ensuring millimeter precision in each component.
The pace is comparable to that of large automotive factories: hundreds of firearms are completed per hour, packaged, and sent directly to logistics centers that supply Brazil and abroad.
Exports and International Presence
About 75% of all Taurus production is destined for export, according to official data released by the company and the portal O Tempo. Brazilian products reach over 40 countries, including the United States, India, the Philippines, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates.
In the United States, Taurus operates a second factory, Taurus USA, located in Georgia — responsible for catering to the largest civilian arms market in the world.
In India, the company operates a joint venture with Jindal Defence, expanding its influence in the Asian market.
This global reach makes Taurus one of the leading industrial exporters in Brazil, with annual revenue exceeding R$ 2.3 billion and recurring profits since 2019.
Technology and Innovation: The New DNA of the Brazilian Arms Industry
In recent years, Taurus has undergone an intense process of technological modernization. The old manual production model has given way to a fully digitalized industrial line, with integrated quality control systems and automated ballistic testing.
The company also invests in ergonomic design, composite materials, and high-strength polymers. The result is a product line that competes with international giants like Glock, Beretta, and Smith & Wesson, but with a cost up to 40% lower, according to market analyses.
Among the best-selling models are:
- Taurus G2C and G3C (compact pistols for civilian and police use);
- TS9 and TH9 (tactical firearms for police use);
- T4 and CTT40 (carbines and rifles for military use).
The most recent innovation is the GX4 line, launched in 2021, considered one of the most advanced pistols ever produced by the national industry.
The Industrial Hub That Drives the Gaúcha Economy
The impact of Taurus on the economy of the Vale dos Sinos is enormous. In addition to over 3,000 direct jobs, the factory maintains a supply chain of hundreds of local suppliers, stimulating sectors such as metallurgy, plastic, energy, and transportation.
The city of São Leopoldo, a traditional metallurgical hub in Rio Grande do Sul, has transformed into a defense and innovation ecosystem, also housing research centers and startups linked to military technology.
According to data from Taurus itself, each direct position at the factory generates four indirect jobs, meaning the industrial complex sustains over 12,000 families in the region.
Sustainability and Energy Efficiency
Even being a heavy industry, Taurus has heavily invested in sustainability and clean energy. A large part of the electricity consumed by the factory comes from renewable sources, and the company maintains a recycling water system for cooling and recycling metallic waste.
The goal for the coming years is to reduce energy consumption per unit produced by 40% and achieve carbon-neutral emissions by 2030.
The Future: Expansion and National Defense
In addition to exporting, Taurus also plays a strategic role in the re-equipment of Brazilian police and military forces.
In partnership with the Army and the Federal Police, the company supplies state-of-the-art firearms and invests in new projects for long guns, ammunition, and tactical equipment.
On the international front, the plan is to expand operations in India and the Middle East, regions with rapid growth in the defense sector.
An Industrial Heritage of Brazil
With 85 years of history, Taurus has established Brazil’s name among the global powers of the arms industry. The factory in São Leopoldo is now a synthesis of engineering, automation, and Brazilian industrial resilience, operating 24 hours a day and producing weapon by weapon with surgical precision.
What began as a small metallurgy shop in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul has transformed into an industrial empire of 22,000 m², employing thousands, driving the regional economy, and placing the country on the global map of military technology.
