Discover The Longest Domestic Passenger Flights In The World, Including Active Routes Between Overseas Territories, Europe, Hawaii, And The Caribbean, With Impressive Distances And Flight Times.

The longest domestic passenger flights in the world attract attention not only for their distance but also for the political, geographical, and operational contexts that make these routes possible.

Over the past few years, some internal air links have surpassed impressive milestones, including routes longer than many traditional international flights.

A Historic Record Driven By The Pandemic

Before analyzing the longest domestic passenger flights in the world still active, it is essential to remember an unprecedented achievement recorded in 2020.

That year, Air Tahiti Nui operated flight TN-64, considered the longest non-stop domestic flight ever operated in the history of commercial aviation.

The route connected Papeete, in French Polynesia, to Paris, in metropolitan France. In total, 15,715 kilometers were covered, with a flight time of nearly 16 hours and 26 minutes, surpassing any other domestic route ever recorded.

The service began on March 15, 2020, when restrictions imposed by the United States prevented technical stops at American airports during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As French Polynesia is an overseas territory of France, the connection was officially classified as a domestic flight within the French Republic.

How The Longest Domestic Flight In The World Operated

Departures took place at Faa’a International Airport in Tahiti, around 3:14 AM local time. Arrival occurred at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris at 6 AM the following day.

The operation was conducted with a Boeing 787-9, carrying between 130 and 150 passengers, with no cargo on the outbound leg.

The flight was maintained only from March to April 2020, with its last record on April 19.

Until then, the record for the longest non-stop flight belonged to the Singapore-Newark route operated by Singapore Airlines.

What Are The Longest Domestic Passenger Flights In The World Today?

With the historic flight of Air Tahiti Nui concluded, the spotlight shifted to regular routes that continue to operate.

Currently, the longest non-stop domestic flight in the world connects Paris (Charles de Gaulle) to Saint-Denis on the island of Réunion, also a French territory.

This route covers 9,349 kilometers, with an average duration of 11 hours and 40 minutes, being operated by Air France and Air Austral, using Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft.

The viability of the route is due to the runway expansion at Saint-Denis airport, carried out in the 1990s.

List Of The Longest Domestic Flights In The World Currently In Operation

Today, the longest domestic passenger flights in the world (active) are concentrated in countries with overseas territories or regions remote from the main continent.

This is especially true for France, the United States, and the Netherlands, which maintain internal routes with distances equivalent to—or even exceeding—many traditional international flights.

At the top of the ranking is the connection between Paris (Charles de Gaulle) and Saint-Denis on the island of Réunion, now considered the longest domestic flight in operation on the planet.

The route covers 9,349 kilometers and takes about 11 hours and 40 minutes.

Just behind, the same connection from Paris-Orly airport covers 9,337 kilometers, with an average time of 11 hours and 30 minutes.

Still within French territory, the route between Marseille and Saint-Denis, also in Réunion, adds up to 8,781 kilometers, with an approximate duration of 11 hours and 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, the flight between Paris-CDG and Mayotte, another overseas territory of France in the Indian Ocean, covers 8,030 kilometers in about 9 hours and 45 minutes.

In the United States, the longest domestic passenger flights in the world mainly involve Hawaii.

The links between New York and Honolulu and between Newark and Honolulu cover 8,020 kilometers and 7,986 kilometers, respectively, both with flight times around 11 hours and 25 minutes.

The route between Washington and Honolulu also ranks among the longest, with 7,752 kilometers and an average duration of 10 hours and 46 minutes.

The Netherlands completes the list with domestic routes connecting the Caribbean to Europe.

The flights between Aruba and Amsterdam, Curaçao and Amsterdam, and Bonaire and Amsterdam range from 7,796 to 7,883 kilometers, with travel times reaching 10 hours and 15 minutes, reinforcing the presence of these connections among the longest still active in the world.

Why Are These Domestic Flights So Long?

The existence of the longest domestic passenger flights in the world is directly linked to countries that maintain overseas territories scattered across different continents.

France, the United States, and the Netherlands account for most of these routes, which function as true internal air bridges despite the enormous distances involved.

These flights demonstrate how modern aviation can overcome extreme geographical challenges, maintaining strategic connections without the need for intermediate stops.
