The Square Cave of China, Located on Yandang Mountain, Combines Volcanic Formations, Taoist Temples and Suspended Walkways 200 Meters High, Where Even a Café in the Clouds Defies Gravity
Among cliffs of red rock and mountain mist, the Square Cave of China, known as Fangdong Cave, stands out as one of the most impressive sites in Zhejiang Province. The location brings together history, spirituality, and engineering, integrating Taoist temples, glass corridors, and a suspended café that challenges the limits of architecture and natural landscape.
Located on Yandang Mountain, an area of about 450 square kilometers of protected land, Fangdong is part of a complex with more than 550 tourist attractions. The mountain is considered one of the ten most famous in China and hosts one of the most well-preserved geological landscapes in the country, with volcanic cliffs and formations that seem to have been shaped by millennia of wind, rain, and silence.
Origin and Structure of the Cave
The Fangdong Cave was first described during the Northern Song Dynasty, when it was called the “Red Rock Cave”.

Its geometric entrance inspired the current name, Fangdong, which literally means “square cave.”
The structure houses a Taoist temple nestled within the contours of the rock, with red pillars and dark roofs that stand out against the gray of the volcanic walls.
The monks still adhere to the tradition of offering blessings and spiritual guidance to visitors.
The silence of the cave, broken only by the sound of water and wind, makes the visit an almost meditative experience.
Paths on the Cliffs and the Clouds Corridor
The cave exit leads to walkways carved directly into the cliffs. Known as the Silver Cliff Sky Corridor, the path extends for about one kilometer and is suspended 200 meters above the ground, offering views that blend vertigo and awe.
The formations of stalactites and volcanic rocks reflect golden hues under sunlight, creating a dramatic contrast with the green of the mountains.
After rain, small waterfalls form along the trail, and the water flowing through the crevices reflects light like strands of pearls. Each curve of the walkway opens up different panoramas, with emerald fields and white villages nestled among the slopes.
The path, which previously had only 50 centimeters in width, has been widened and equipped with safety barriers, maintaining the thrill without compromising safety.
The Suspended Café and the Temple of the Clouds
Inside the rock itself, a modern surprise emerges: a suspended café within the cave. The location preserves the original textures of the stone and offers an experience that combines minimalist design and total integration with the natural environment. The informal slogan among visitors is “afternoon tea at the top of the clouds.”
A few meters away, another Taoist temple adapts to the recesses of the mountain, maintaining harmony between spirituality and nature.
From there, visitors can observe the cultivated fields in the valley and the waters reflecting the sky, forming an almost pictorial composition. The panoramic view includes agricultural terraces that curve like the fingerprints of the earth.
Glass Viewpoints and Altitude Experiences
One of the most photographed spots is the Cloud-Top Restaurant, with a large glass frame that creates the illusion of an open portal to the horizon.
The platform, built over cavities of volcanic rhyolite, combines modern engineering with the natural relief, creating a total immersive visual experience. On cloudy days, the location appears to float above the sea of clouds covering the valleys.
In another section, a suspended bridge links two cliffs 200 meters high. Nearly 200 meters long, the crossing sways slightly with the wind, intensifying the sensation of walking in the clouds.
When the mist forms, the scenery transforms into an ethereal crossing — hence the poetic name “Cloud Mist Bridge.”
Geology, Culture, and Conservation
Yandang Mountain is predominantly formed by Cretaceous volcanic rocks, the result of ancient eruptions that sculpted the region’s unique relief.
This geological heritage is now recognized as a national conservation area, where tourism is controlled and modern structures adhere to strict environmental impact regulations.
In addition to its natural value, Fangdong holds cultural and spiritual significance, being one of the historical centers of Taoism in eastern China.
Local practices combine contemplation, respect for the mountain, and meditation rituals, integrating spirituality with environmental preservation and aesthetic contemplation.
The Square Cave of China represents the fusion of nature, faith, and engineering. Suspended between cliffs and clouds, Fangdong demonstrates how tradition and modernity can coexist in balance.
