Campina Grande Stands Out in the Northeast by Overcoming State Dependency with Strong Growth in Technology, Technical Education, and Entrepreneurship. Understand the Economic Development in Campina Grande, Its Innovative Technological Hub, and the Advances in GDP That Drive the Local Economy

Campina Grande, located in the Paraíba hinterlands, is today one of the most notable examples of economic transformation in northeastern Brazil. From a past marked by dependency on the public sector, the city has embarked on a bold path: it has invested in technology, technical education, and entrepreneurship to boost its development. The result is a constantly expanding economy, with indices that surpass the national average in various sectors.

According to IBGE, the GDP of Campina Grande — PB reached R$ 9.51 billion in 2019, marking a growth of 3.9% compared to the previous year. With a productive structure strongly anchored in the services and technology sectors, the municipality is now the second-largest economy in Paraíba and a true success story on the national stage.

Campina Grande PB Economy: Evolution of GDP and Structure

The economy of Campina Grande — PB stands out in the Paraíba and northeastern context. In 2021, the municipality reached a per capita GDP of R$ 25,066 — a figure well above the state average (approximately R$ 19,100) and regional average (R$ 16,700), according to data from Caravela.info and IBGE. This indicates not only an increase in local wealth generation but also a more consistent distribution compared to the rest of the state.

The productive structure of Campina Grande is predominantly tertiary: the services sector represents 75.9% of the total, followed by industry (23.7%) and agriculture (0.3%). Notable are the Commerce and Higher Education Quadrilateral, areas that drive both consumption and the formation of a qualified workforce.

This economic profile demonstrates a significant change in the city’s development model, which traditionally depended on the public sector. Currently, Campina is heavily investing in consolidating an environment conducive to private investment and innovation.

Campina Grande in Technology and Technical Professional Training

Campina Grande in Technology is already a national reference. The city hosts the Bodocongó Technology Hub, an area that brings together universities, research centers, and rapidly growing startups. Institutions such as the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG) and the State University of Paraíba (UEPB) play a central role in this ecosystem, offering undergraduate and graduate courses in engineering, computer science, mathematics, and related fields.

In total, there are more than 21 higher education institutions, along with public and private technical schools, consolidating the offer of technical education in Campina Grande as one of the most qualified in the Northeast. This robust educational base serves as an engine of innovation, supplying qualified labor to the growing number of companies in the technology sector.

The Bodocongó Technology Hub houses initiatives such as the CITTA (Center for Innovation and Technology Telmo Araújo), which connects emerging companies with researchers and investors. In addition, the city has a tradition of innovation since the 1960s, when the first computer courses were implemented at UFCG. In 2001, the American magazine Newsweek even listed Campina as one of the nine innovative centers in the world, being the only one in Latin America.

Entrepreneurship in Campina Grande and Expanding Business Environment

Entrepreneurship in Campina Grande is another decisive factor in the city’s current growth cycle. In recent years, effective public policies, such as the Empreender Paraíba program, have ensured credit, training, and technical support for small businesses and startups.

With an investment of R$ 1.3 million just in the most recent grants, the program benefits micro and small entrepreneurs who previously had no access to the traditional banking system. These resources help stimulate sectors such as commerce, services, and the creative economy, strengthening the local business base.

In addition to credit, the municipality implements actions to reduce bureaucracy and tax incentives to attract new investors. The business environment is continuously strengthened with the support of institutions like SEBRAE, which offer strategic guidance and business training.

In industry, the numbers are equally impressive: according to the Jornal da Paraíba, Paraíba registered an average annual growth of 12% in the number of companies and jobs in the sector, with an 18% increase in the salary mass — with Campina Grande being one of the main vectors of this advance.

Technological Hub in Campina Grande and Regional Economic Impact

The economic development in Campina Grande is already resonating beyond municipal borders. The city plays a role as a logistical and commercial hub, serving metropolitan regions such as João Pessoa, Recife, and Natal through BRs 104 and 230. Its strategic geographical position allows for the rapid flow of products, services, and technology to other urban centers in the Northeast.

Moreover, the technology sector represents 20% of the total revenue of software companies in the city, with around 76 active firms and over R$ 25 million in annual revenue. These data show that the technological hub in Campina Grande is not merely a promise — it is a consolidated reality, with measurable and consistent results.

Another differentiator is the multiplier effect of the educational and technological sector on income, local consumption, and talent attraction. The virtuous cycle formed by technical education in Campina Grande, innovation, and entrepreneurship has boosted the city’s competitiveness compared to other regions of the country.

The Example of Campina Grande for the Future of the Northeast

The trajectory of Campina Grande reveals how an interior city in northeastern Brazil can break the logic of state dependency and invest in sustainable solutions for growth.

Based on investment in technical education, support for entrepreneurship, and strengthening an active technological hub, the city has become a leader in the regional economic landscape.

The data on Campina Grande’s GDP, its dynamism in income and job generation, and its positioning as an innovative center in Brazil prove that the path taken is producing results. The city is now synonymous with resilience, innovation, and strategic vision.

More than just an exception in the hinterland, Campina Grande is proof that, with effective public policies, quality education, and technology incentives, it is possible to transform realities and inspire other regions of the country.
