The Renault, Nissan Motor, and Mitsubishi Motors Group Form the Largest Automotive Alliance in the World Through the Oldest and Most Productive Intercultural Partnership in the Automotive Industry

The largest automotive alliance in the world, formed by the Renault Group, Nissan, and Mitsubishi, is set to eliminate a role overseeing ties with Daimler in favor of individual relations with the German group, three sources told Reuters, as they seek to better manage a partnership that has not met initial hopes.

The change comes as alliance-level executive Jacques Verdonck, responsible for cooperation with Daimler, retires at the end of the month, sources familiar with the matter said.

The French multinational Renault will rely on its partnerships chief, Sandra Gomez, while Nissan will do the same with Catherine Perez.

Mitsubishi will also have a person in charge of partnerships, the sources said, adding that the bilateral approach aligns with the alliance’s new “leader-follower” strategy. This involves leveraging each automaker’s strengths in specific areas.

Ghost Carlos Ghosn

The plan attempts to change its image and ultimately end the era of Brazilian Carlos Ghosn in the alliance. The architect of the Franco-Japanese partnership, which also extended collaboration to Daimler, was arrested on charges of financial misconduct in Japan in late 2018, before escaping to Lebanon in 2019. He denies any wrongdoing.

The arrest and escape of Ghosn strained relations among the different manufacturers and between Nissan and Renault, which are now working to get back on track with joint cost-saving production projects, among other steps.

Collaborations on Renault’s compact Twingo car and Daimler’s Smart model are set to end, and some industrial cooperation targets have been downgraded over the years.

But Daimler still has a factory in Mexico with Nissan and has been exploring the possibility of jointly developing at least one major van model with Renault.

Electric Vehicles Could Yield Other Opportunities for the Largest Automotive Alliance in the World Formed by the Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi Group

An industry shift to electric vehicles could still yield other opportunities, one of the sources said.

“Collaboration with Daimler is currently made up of Renault-Daimler projects, Nissan-Daimler projects, and some among all three,” said another of the sources, with one more adding that the changes reflected a more pragmatic approach.

The Renault, Nissan Motor, and Mitsubishi Motors Group form the largest automotive alliance in the world through the oldest and most productive intercultural partnership in the automotive industry. Cumulative sales of the three partner companies surpassed 10.6 million vehicles in nearly 200 countries in 2017.

The partner companies rely on collaboration and optimization of their synergies to take their competitiveness to a maximum level, as well as establishing strategic collaboration agreements with other automakers. The Alliance is a leader in the production of zero-emission vehicles and develops innovative technologies for autonomous, connected, and accessible vehicles, focusing on the mobility of the future.
