With 2,728 “Beetles” in Interlagos, São Paulo Hosted the Largest Beetle Parade in the World. Remember the Organization, the Show, and the Legacy of This Memorable Day.

May 1, 1995, marked a significant moment in Brazilian automotive history. São Paulo was the stage for the largest Beetle parade in the world, an event that brought together a crowd of enthusiasts and their beloved “Beetles.” The bold objective was to break a world record, and the passion for the iconic Volkswagen car made it possible.

This article recalls the details of the largest Beetle parade in the world. From the organization and the spectacle at the Interlagos racetrack to the official recognition by Guinness. A journey back in time to celebrate a day that demonstrated the strength of “Beetle culture” in Brazil.

The “Fuscamania” in São Paulo: Preparations for a World Record

The energy was contagious in São Paulo on that May 1, 1995. Thousands of Beetle fans were preparing for an extraordinary feat. The goal was to hold the largest parade of the model ever seen, surpassing previous records.

The idea of a record gathering of Beetles had been growing. The “National Beetle Day” and the “1st National Beetle Meeting” (1989) were catalysts. A previous record, with 1,528 cars in 1994, inspired the organizers to dream bigger. The final count validated by Guinness World Records was impressive: 2,728 Beetles participated in the event, a testament to the national passion for the car. Choosing the Labor Day holiday was strategic to maximize participation.

The realization of the largest Beetle parade in the world required planning and dedication. The Beetle Club of Brazil, led by Alexander Gromow, was central to the organization. The event received support from Volkswagen do Brasil and De Simone Promoções for logistics.

An emotional element marked the gathering: the event was also a tribute to driver Ayrton Senna. The three-time Formula 1 world champion had passed away exactly one year earlier, on May 1, 1994. This tribute enhanced the event’s appeal, turning it into a touching expression of affection and collective memory.

Interlagos in Celebration: The Day When 2,728 Beetles Colored the Racetrack

The Interlagos racetrack was the perfect setting for the celebration. The legendary circuit offered space and prestige to the gathering. Participants reported a true “sea of Beetles” cruising the track. The number of cars was so large that it caused traffic jams at the racetrack.

In addition to the parade, the event featured various attractions. There was a “Fusqueata” that left Tatuapé headed to Interlagos, showcasing popular mobilization. Personal stories, such as Alfredo Ralisch’s 1986 award-winning Beetle, and the presence of rare vehicles like an amphibious Schwimmwagen, enriched the day. The organization demonstrated care for safety, with Kombis and rescue cars controlling the speed of the convoy. An estimated crowd of fifteen thousand people attended the event.

The Record in Guinness

The effort of the organizers and the passion of the participants were rewarded. The São Paulo event obtained the Guinness World Record for the “Largest Volkswagen (VW) Car Parade”, with 2,728 Beetles.

This international recognition validated the grandeur of the achievement. For the Beetle Club of Brazil and its members, having its name associated with the Guinness record was a source of great pride. The longevity of this record, remembered by specialized publications years later, attests to the lasting impact of the largest Beetle parade in the world. It was a celebration that etched the Brazilian passion for the Beetle in the history books.
