Pilot Project of the Hydroelectric Power Plant With Investment of US$ 1 Million Seeks to Boost Sustainable Energy Generation in Countries!

Itaipu Binacional, known for its grand hydroelectric plant, took an innovative step by announcing the installation of a floating solar plant in its reservoir. This Thursday (25), the bid for the supply of equipment, installation, and technical assistance for the pilot project was published, with a planned investment of US$ 1 million (approximately R$ 5.5 million), according to the h2foz website.

Details of the Floating Solar Plant Project

The pilot project of the floating solar plant will have a generation capacity of 1 megawatt-peak (MWp). The solar panels will be installed on the Paraguayan side of the Itaipu hydroelectric reservoir. The generated energy will be used for the internal consumption of the plant itself, promoting greater energy efficiency and contributing to sustainability.

The initiative is open to participation from binational consortia, composed of Brazilian and Paraguayan companies. This collaboration between countries aims to strengthen economic and technological ties, as well as foster the exchange of knowledge in the field of renewable energy.

Advantages and Impacts of the Project

The floating solar plant brings various advantages, both environmental and economic. The project integrates Itaipu Binational’s efforts to address the global climate crisis by developing sustainable solutions in the energy sector. Furthermore, the floating solar plant optimizes the use of the existing reservoir without the need to occupy new land areas.

According to Enio Verri, Brazilian General Director of Itaipu, “the solution found here at Itaipu could serve as a model for the installation of similar projects in other Brazilian reservoirs.” Thus, the initiative not only meets local demands but also has the potential to inspire other renewable energy projects across Brazil.

Supplementary Studies and Research

In parallel to the implementation of the floating solar plant, Itaipu Binational, Itaipu Parquetec, and the Itaipu Technological Park (Paraguay) will develop the project “Studies for the Sustainability of the Floating Solar Plant (USF) in the Reservoir of the Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant (UHI).”

These studies will compare energy generation between the floating plant and ground solar plants, evaluate business models for Brazilian and Paraguayan legislation, and analyze impacts on Itaipu’s internal energy grid. Additionally, simulations will be conducted for the possible expansion of the floating plant and inclusion of battery systems.

One of the main focuses will be the assessment of possible environmental impacts of the photovoltaic plant on the reservoir, ensuring that the project is sustainable in the long term and does not harm the local ecosystem.

Consortium Participation and Execution Timeline

Companies interested in participating in the bidding must form binational consortia, composed of companies from Brazil and Paraguay, with each member holding at least 30% participation. The public session of the bidding is scheduled to occur within 30 days.

After signing the service order, the timeline for the installation of the solar panels is 150 calendar days. In addition, an additional 180 days will be added for technical assistance, training, and final acceptance of the product, totaling 330 days for the complete execution of the project.

An Important Milestone for Renewable Energy in the World

The installation of the floating solar plant in the Itaipu hydroelectric reservoir represents an important milestone in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions. This pilot project, in addition to contributing to the generation of clean energy, has the potential to serve as a model for other similar initiatives in Brazil and worldwide. Don’t miss the opportunity to closely follow this technological and sustainable advancement.
