Innovative Renewable Energy Project Promises to Supply 600 Thousand Homes and Create Thousands of Jobs in the Region
According to elektrek, New York is about to make history in renewable energy with the start of construction on the Sunrise Wind, the largest offshore wind farm in the country. Announced by Governor Kathy Hochul, this project represents a significant milestone in the fight against climate change and the promotion of clean energy sources.
A Great Step Towards Renewable Energy
Sunrise Wind, located about 30 miles east of Montauk Point, Long Island, will have a capacity of 924 megawatts (MW). This immense wind farm will generate enough energy to supply approximately 600 thousand homes in New York. Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of the project, stating that it symbolizes a tremendous advance for the state in its mission to combat climate change. “By initiating the Sunrise Wind and advancing the next wave of offshore wind projects, New York is making a tremendous milestone in the fight against climate change,” Hochul said.
Project Details and Partnerships
After obtaining the final license from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) of the U.S. Department of the Interior, the project is ready to move forward. The construction and operation plan details the spacing of one nautical mile between wind turbines and includes mitigation measures to protect marine habitats and species.

An “invisible” plant can transform rivers meeting the sea into electricity 24 hours a day: French startup uses nanotechnology to extract energy from the salt difference between fresh and saltwater, without sun, wind, dam, or fuel.

Initially a 50-50 partnership between Ørsted and Eversource, the project is now fully controlled by Ørsted, which acquired Eversource’s stake for US$ 78 million. The Sunrise Wind team will ramp up work on the onshore transmission system, while offshore construction will begin later this year at the project site.
Economic and Social Benefits
Sunrise Wind will not only promote renewable energy but also boost the local economy. The project will create 800 direct jobs in New York and thousands of indirect jobs. John R. Durso, president of the Long Island Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, highlighted the importance of the jobs generated: “Hundreds of local union workers will have well-paying jobs building the Sunrise Wind onshore and offshore. Moving this project forward will help power our grid and our regional economy.”
Moreover, the offshore power export cable will reach Smith Point County Park in Brookhaven, New York, and a new converter station and an existing expanded substation will be installed in Holbrook, New York.
Contribution to Environmental Goals
The project is an integral part of New York’s effort to meet its mandate of 70% renewable electricity by 2030. Sunrise Wind finalized its agreements with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) in a 25-year offshore wind renewable energy certificate (OREC) contract.
Initially, the project canceled its contract from New York’s first offshore wind bid in 2019 but achieved viable power purchase agreements in the state’s fourth offshore wind auction in February of this year. This advancement demonstrates New York’s continued commitment to renewable energy and its leadership role in the fight against climate change.
A Sustainable Future
The construction of Sunrise Wind is a shining example of how innovation and determination can transform the energy future of a region. With the capacity to generate clean energy for hundreds of thousands of homes and create a significant number of jobs, this project shows that a sustainable future is not only possible but also beneficial for the economy and society.
As construction progresses, New York continues to lead the way in adopting renewable energy technologies, paving the way for a healthier planet and a brighter future for all. So keep an eye on Sunrise Wind – it promises to be a true “wind of change” for renewable energy in the United States.
