The Largest Floating Wind Farm in the World Has Generated Its First Power with Siemens Gamesa Turbines, Having a Capacity of 88 MW, Becoming the Most Powerful of Its Kind on the Planet!

The western and northern seas of Europe are known for strong wind currents and, therefore, should become one of the bases of European energy using renewable energy sources. The Norwegian company Equinor said that the power production of the first wind turbine of the Hywind Tampen – the largest floating wind farm in the world, has started!

The plant has a total of 11 turbines (8MW Siemens Gamesa SG 8.0-167 DD). Seven of the wind farm’s turbines came online in 2022, with the installation of the remaining four taking place in 2023. When completed, Equinor says that the offshore wind farm will have a system capacity of 88 megawatts, making it the most powerful of its kind in the world!

The First Wind Farm in the World That Powers Oil and Gas Production Facilities

The largest floating wind farm in the world will be used to make oil and gas extraction a bit more ecological in the North Sea and will also contribute to greater energy independence in Norway and Europe. Equinor said that the first power from Hywind Tampen was sent to the Gullfaks field.

“I am proud that we have now started energy production at Hywind Tampen, the first and largest floating wind farm in the world,” said Geir Tungesvik, Executive Vice President of Equinor for projects, drilling, and procurement.

“This is a unique project, the first wind farm in the world that powers oil and gas production facilities.”

Equinor also stated that Hywind Tampen will meet about 35% of the energy demand of the Gullfaks and Snorre fields. “This will reduce the CO2 emissions from the oil and gas fields by around 200,000 tons per year,” added the oil company.

Hywind Tampen is located about 140 kilometers (86.9 miles) off the coast of Norway, at depths ranging from 260 to 300 meters.

Siemens Gamesa Turbines

The 11.8 MW Siemens Gamesa turbines at Hywind Tampen are installed on a floating concrete structure, with a joint mooring system. One advantage of floating wind turbines is that they allow installation in deeper waters compared to fixed-bottom turbines.

Equinor started operating Hywind Scotland in 2017, a 30 MW floating wind farm with five turbines, a project considered the first floating wind farm in the world.

The U.S. Government Said It Wanted at Least 15 GW of Floating Offshore Wind Capacity Installed on the U.S. Coast by 2035

Several other floating wind farm projects have come online in the past five years or are in development.

The Biden administration said it wanted at least 15 GW of floating offshore wind capacity installed on the U.S. coast by 2035. The administration’s “Floating Offshore Wind Shot” aims to reduce the costs of floating offshore wind technologies by more than 70% over the next decade.
