Bolivian Gas Destined for Argentina Will Be Redirected to Brazil

If there is something Brazil needs more than coffee in the mornings, it is energy. And, to the joy of energy-thirsty Brazilians, the Bolivian gas that used to supply Argentina will be redirected to Brazil, as announced by the Bolivian oil company YPFB this Thursday (26). With Argentina reducing its imports to zero, Brazil has become the new guaranteed destination for this precious energy source.

The Bolivian oil company YPFB confirmed in an official statement that the Bolivian gas, previously destined for Argentina, will now be redirected to Brazil. The decision was made after Argentina reduced its imports, a consequence of the development of the Vaca Muerta shale formation, one of the largest gas and oil reserves in the world.

Brazil as the Ideal Destination to Absorb the Surplus of Bolivian Gas

Óscar Claros Dulón, manager of natural gas export contracts at the Bolivian oil company YPFB, stated that the redirecting will not negatively impact the country. “For us, this is not a problem at all, because this gas has a guaranteed market in Brazil, a country hungry for energy,” highlighted Claros Dulón.

The change occurs at a moment when the supply from Bolivia to Argentina has dropped drastically, reaching only two million cubic meters per day, a fraction of the Argentine consumption, which is around 130 million cubic meters daily. With this reduction, Brazil, known for its increasing demand for energy, emerges as the ideal destination to absorb the surplus of Bolivian gas.

Argentinian Reserves of Vaca Muerta

The development of the Argentinian reserves of Vaca Muerta has provided greater energy independence to the neighboring country, which has inevitably reduced its dependence on gas imported from Bolivia. Now, with Brazil taking on this position as a buyer, the Bolivian oil company YPFB finds new opportunities in the South American energy market.

This movement reinforces the importance of Bolivian gas in the energy scenario of Brazil and is expected to directly impact the supply of the national market, which has been facing challenges to meet the growing demand for energy.

Will this change in the destination of Bolivian gas be enough to meet Brazil’s growing energy demand, or will the country need to seek other sources to ensure its energy security in the future?
