Kia is entering the competitive midsize pickup arena with the Tasman. This is Kia’s first midsize pickup, a milestone for the South Korean manufacturer. The model, built on a dedicated chassis platform, has been confirmed for a global launch, including Brazil.

Kia is also investing in sustainable materials, such as bioplastics and recycled PET fabric.

The Kia Tasman will be offered with two main engine options, depending on the market. The primary engine for export markets like Australia is a 2.2L CRDi Turbo Diesel, producing around 210 hp and 441 Nm of torque. For the Korean market, the entry option is a 2.5L Smartstream T-GDi gasoline engine, with 281 hp and 421 Nm.

Both engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The pickup will be available in 4×2 and 4×4 configurations. The front suspension is double wishbone, and the rear is a solid axle with leaf springs. For off-road, the Tasman features terrain modes, differential lock, and technologies such as Ground Vision Monitor (GVM). Its towing capacity is 3,500 kg, and its payload capacity exceeds 1,000 kg.

Global Launch And The Arrival Of The Kia Tasman In Brazil

Kia plans a phased global launch for the Tasman, with production centralized in South Korea. The world premiere occurred in October 2024, simultaneously in Saudi Arabia and Australia. Australia is a priority market where the pickup has been extensively tested and adapted.

The arrival of Kia’s first midsize pickup in the Brazilian market is scheduled for 2026. The pickup has already been seen in tests in Brazil and is expected to compete directly with the sales leaders Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Chevrolet S10. There are reports that production for Latin America may take place in Uruguay.

The choice of the 2.2L diesel engine for export markets aims to reach the largest market segment, where four-cylinder engines dominate. According to Roland Rivero from Kia Australia, “more than 80% of this category is four-cylinder diesel,” and the brand focused on getting the fundamentals right.

The disruptive potential of the Tasman lies in its ability to bring a high level of design, technology, and SUV comfort to the pickup segment, a growing trend. The Tasman’s modular chassis, capable of accommodating “numerous drivetrains,” is also seen as a platform prepared for the future. Kia itself has confirmed that it is exploring hybrid and fully electric variants for the pickup, although a V6 option was ruled out due to emissions regulations.

Kia’s Bet To Differentiate The Tasman

The first midsize pickup from Kia arrives with a strong technology package. The highlight of the interior is the panoramic screen with two 12.3-inch displays for the instrument cluster and the infotainment system, which features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as Over-The-Air (OTA) updates.

In terms of safety, the Tasman will offer a comprehensive set of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The standard equipment is expected to include Emergency Autonomous Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Lane Keeping Assistance. For towing, the pickup features Trailer Sway Control and an integrated brake controller.
