Beach Faces Crisis With DER Embargoes Threatening to Demolish 60 Establishments, Affecting Jobs and Local Culture.

Perequê Beach, one of the most iconic tourist destinations in Baixada Santista, faces an imminent threat that could forever change the local landscape.

The tranquility of the fishmongers and seafood restaurants that make the beach famous may be numbered. What once seemed like a seaside paradise is now on the brink of a crisis, with thousands of jobs and the livelihood of many families at stake.

The main reason for this crisis is the recent decision by the Department of Highways (DER) to embargo several establishments along the Ariovaldo de Almeida Viana Highway (SP-61), which runs alongside Perequê Beach.

According to the newspaper Diário do Litoral, the publication gained exclusive access to a list revealing 60 addresses of businesses, including pharmacies and other enterprises, that could be demolished following a lengthy legal battle.

Immediate Impact

The DER claims that these embargoes are necessary to regularize the occupation of the highway’s right of way, a legal procedure aimed at ensuring safety and order in areas adjacent to highways.

According to the agency, the highway hosts about 90 embargoed properties, with 60 of those located at Perequê Beach. The destruction of these establishments, which range from fish stalls to schools, could deal a devastating blow to the local community.

The Defense of Business Owners

Attorney Eduardo Diogo Brazolin, who recently achieved a legal victory against the DER, argues in an interview with the aforementioned newspaper that the solution to this impasse could be the municipalization of the highway.

According to him, the DER has repeatedly expressed support for municipalization, but the initiative has yet to come from the municipality. He further states that if the highway were municipalized, construction limitations would be lifted, allowing all these properties to remain.

Community in Danger

Perequê Beach, located east of Santo Amaro Island in Guarujá, is known for housing the largest fishing colony in the municipality and for being a bastion of local traditions.

The area is famous for offering fresh fish and seafood, attracting tourists from around the world. The threat of demolition not only jeopardizes the economic survival of dozens of fishing families but also the charm and authenticity that make the beach such a special destination.

Pending Issues

The Guarujá City Hall has not yet commented on the embargo, and there is no official confirmation of any plans to reverse the situation.

Meanwhile, the local community anxiously waits for a solution that can balance the need for legal compliance with the preservation of their traditions and livelihoods.

And now, with the looming crisis that could forever alter the face of Perequê Beach, what will become of the future of these business owners and workers? How do you see the possibility of a solution to this impasse between the DER and the local community? Share your opinion in the comments!
