Goodbye Gasoline Engine In The Corolla: Toyota Retires All Gasoline Versions In Japan, And Hybrid Model Is Already Cheaper Than A Volkswagen Polo
In a surprising decision, Toyota revolutionizes by completely abandoning the gasoline engine in the Corolla! The Japanese automaker accelerates its transition to electrified vehicles by removing all versions of the world’s best-selling car from the Japanese market. The new hybrid generation arrives with more technology, competitive prices, and reinforces the brand’s position as a leader in the race for carbon neutrality.
For those who don’t know, according to research conducted using data from 162 countries, this beloved model started 2025 as the world’s best-selling car, with 244,751 units sold from January to April 2025. The information comes from automotive consultancy Focus2Move, which released the global sales report for the first quarter of the year.
Toyota Says Goodbye To The Traditional 1.8 Gasoline Engine Without Electrification
Toyota has taken a decisive step toward total electrification by announcing that, starting in the 2025 lineup, the Corolla sold in Japan will be exclusively hybrid. This means the traditional 1.8 gasoline engine without electrification will officially no longer be offered in the automaker’s home country.

This change had already been tested in other markets, such as Europe, where since 2022 the Corolla has only been sold with hybrid powertrains, according to the automaker’s own information on its European portal. Now, Japan follows the same path, aligning with Toyota’s goal to zero out its carbon emissions by 2050.
“The energy transition is part of our commitment to the future of the planet. We are making hybrids more accessible to accelerate this transformation,” stated a Toyota spokesperson during the official announcement.
New Japanese Hybrid Corolla Is Equipped With A 1.8 Combustion Engine With 97 HP Combined With A 94 HP Front Electric Motor
The new Japanese hybrid Corolla is equipped with a 1.8 combustion engine with 97 HP, combined with a 94 HP front electric motor. In E-Four versions, with all-wheel drive, the system also adds a 40 HP rear electric motor. This combination offers smooth, quiet, and efficient performance, ideal for urban and highway traffic.
Toyota has led the hybrid segment with its reliable propulsion technology, already established in models like the Prius. This reinforces the brand’s image as one of the main references in the development of sustainable technologies.
More Safety And Connectivity In The 2025 Lineup
In addition to the change in the mechanical setup, the 2025 Toyota Corolla lineup in Japan brings important advancements in standard equipment, especially in the mid-range versions. Consumers will now have access to:
- Front and rear cameras with integrated recording;
- Digital key with remote access;
- Blind spot monitor;
- Safe exit alert;
- Low-speed maneuvering brake assist.
These items elevate the active safety level of the model and align the Corolla with the most modern offerings in the medium sedan segment.
Design With Subtle Improvements And New Visual Details
Although the design of the current generation of the Toyota Corolla underwent a light facelift in 2022, the 2025 version brings some targeted visual updates. The G version, for example, features new 16-inch wheels and LED fog lights. The entry-level version, called X, maintains 15-inch steel wheels with hubcaps, an analog dashboard, and does not have a multimedia center.
A highlight is that 100% LED lighting now becomes standard across the entire lineup, both front and rear, reinforcing the modern and technological appearance of the model.
Price Of The Toyota Hybrid Corolla: This Favorite Is Cheaper Than The Volkswagen Polo
One of the most striking points in this overhaul is the price. The Toyota Corolla Hybrid X, entry-level version in Japan, has a suggested price of 2,279,200 yen – approximately R$ 88 thousand in direct conversion. Meanwhile, the top-of-the-line version, the Touring Active Sport Hybrid E-Four, costs 3,416,600 yen (around R$ 132 thousand).
For comparison, a Volkswagen Polo Highline 200 TSI in Brazil has a starting price of R$ 135,990, according to the official Volkswagen website. In other words, the new hybrid Corolla, with all its technology and dual powertrain, enters the market at a price lower than that of compact hatches in Brazil.
The launch of the new versions of Toyota occurs in stages: the Corolla Sport (hatch) arrives at Japanese dealerships on May 9, while the sedan and Touring (wagon) versions will be available starting May 19.
The End Of The Gasoline Engine In The Toyota Corolla Is Just The Beginning
With over 50 years of history and the title of the world’s best-selling car, the Toyota Corolla continues its reinvention journey. The removal of the gasoline version from the Japanese market is a milestone in this new phase, focused on energy efficiency, connectivity, and sustainability. Gradually, the automaker will also likely stop producing the gasoline version in other countries, firmly establishing the Corolla as a purely hybrid model on a global scale.
The next generation of the model is already in development and is expected to debut in 2026, with significant advancements in connectivity, performance, and onboard technology, according to industry analysts.
Toyota shows that its bet on hybrids is a well-calculated strategy to continue leading the global automotive sector. While many brands are still adapting, the Japanese automaker is advancing with more efficient, accessible, and modern models.
The end of the gasoline engine in the Japanese Toyota Corolla may seem radical, but it represents just the beginning of a new phase. And what do you think, is Brazil ready for such a deep change?
