Aiming to Replace the Iconic Gol, Volkswagen Is Focusing Its Efforts on Developing the SUV Yeh. Intended for Emerging Markets, the Model Stands Out for Its Impressive Design.
Volkswagen is trying to keep it under wraps; however, behind the scenes, it has been working since the end of last year on the so-called Project 246, which will be a new compact SUV focused on emerging markets. Called Volkswagen Yeh in Brazil, the model would fill the gap left by the VW Gol, which was definitively discontinued by the German brand earlier this year.
SUV Volkswagen Yeh Is Still a Mystery
According to media reports, the new compact SUV from the German automaker will be developed on the MQB-A00 platform, a basic version of the Polo chassis, and it is said to have a name already defined: Volkswagen Yeh. Furthermore, the automaker is considering producing the Gol’s replacement at the Volkswagen plant located in Taubaté, in the interior of São Paulo.
The design of the Volkswagen Yeh SUV is still a mystery, since automotive press has speculated that the new car will have lines inspired by the Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo, a compact SUV from Volkswagen’s subsidiary in Eastern Europe.

However, the new SUV from the German brand is expected to align more closely with the company’s new design language, revealed in the electric concept ID.2all. Inside, the new Volkswagen Yeh SUV is likely to share a similar shape to that seen on the VW Nivus, the Polo SUV, also built on the MQB platform by Volkswagen.
Here, the expectation is that the new Volkswagen model will also have a top-of-the-line electrified configuration, featuring mild hybrid technology. The launch of the model in the Brazilian market is estimated for the first quarter of 2025.
According to the automaker, the future Gol replacement in Brazil will also have versions for other emerging markets like India and China, as well as Europe, with fully electric variants to compete with models such as the Citroën e-C3, a new model presented by Stellantis.
SUV Successor to the Gol Comes from an Old Story
The story of the Gol’s successor is already old and has been updated over the past few years. The first mention of the Volkswagen Yeh SUV occurred in 2017, when an image revealing the future of Volkswagen in the region through 2020 was shared. There was already talk of the MQB-A00 platform, a simplified version of the MQB-Ao of the Polo. It was also stated at that time that the name Gol might be set aside, as the German headquarters has always wanted to unify car names for the brand globally.
With the growing preference for SUVs, the automaker has been adapting to this new scenario. The pandemic prompted a freeze on some plans, which were subsequently updated again. During a Motor1 live session with Pablo di Si, the then CEO of Volkswagen Brazil confirmed that there would be room for an SUV smaller than the Nivus in Brazil, essentially confirming in no uncertain terms that a new model would be the true successor to the Gol.
Volkswagen Plans New Sports Car for 2024
According to reports, the Nivus GTS, a new model from the German automaker, is expected to launch in 2024, equipped with the IQ. Light system and 18-inch wheels. For those unfamiliar, this model falls into the compact SUV category, competing directly with Fiat’s Pulse.
Sources indicate that Volkswagen plans to introduce the brand-new sporty version of the Nivus next year, accompanied by design and performance updates. The model will feature a 250 TSI (1.4 Turbo) engine, which currently powers the Polo GTS. The news also points out that the launch is timed to coincide with the fourth anniversary of the Nivus line.
