Cooking gas price reaches 120 reais in the Brazilian Midwest even with zeroed federal PIS and Cofins tax; gasoline and diesel retreat

Even after the federal government eliminated PIS and Cofins taxes for the sale of 13 kg Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders and a slight drop in the commodity last week on the international market, which induced reductions in gasoline and diesel prices by Petrobras on March 25, the price of cooking gas reached R$ 120,00 in the Midwest region, the highest value in the history of fuel!

The price of cooking gas was practically stable at R$ 83,25 a cylinder, in the national average, whose last readjustment by Petrobras was on March 1st.

Between last week and the previous week, the Southeast region had a slight drop in kitchen gas prices, 1,5% going to R$ 62,99. In the South, the price reduction was 0,1% (R$ 84,19); and in the Northeast, 0,9% (R$ 81,19) while the North region also recorded prices 0,6% higher (R$ 93,77).

According to data from the National Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANP), even without exemption from federal PIS and Cofins taxes, the price of gasoline fell 0,7% in the week from March 21 to 27 compared to the previous week. Diesel, which also benefited from the tax drop, had a price reduction of around 0,1%.

Petrobras informs that PIS and Cofins taxes on cooking gas and diesel are already being reset at the time of purchase at refineries. In the case of cooking gas, the distributor must present a declaration that it will be packaged in cylinders, so as not to benefit LPG sales to industries and companies.

The covid-19 pandemic has increased consumption by Brazilians. In 2020, the increase in the price of kitchen gas was 5% in the consumption of the 13 kg cylinder compared to the previous year. The consumption of industrial cooking gas fell by 2,3%.

The Energy Research Company (EPE) projects an increase in the price of 1,7% per year for the demand for LPG until 2030, replacing the use of firewood and coal in rural areas, while in urban centers cooking gas loses space to piped natural gas. In a decade (2021 -2020), LPG consumption rose 8,8%, according to data from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP).

Brazil has 19 LPG distributors, with four companies holding 80% of the market: Ultragaz (23%); Liquigás (21%); Supergasbras (20%) and Nacional Gás (18%).According to the National Union of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Distribution Companies (Sindigás).
