Germany Loses Leadership in Beer Production in Europe After Decline in 2024; Russia Takes the Lead with 8.8% Increase
Beer production in Germany fell in 2024, causing the country to lose its position as the largest European manufacturer of the beverage.
The leadership is now with Russia, which produced 9.1 billion liters in the year, an increase of 8.8% compared to 2023.
Meanwhile, German production fell from 8.5 billion to 8.4 billion liters in the same period.

This decline not only stripped Germany of first place in Europe but also pushed it down to sixth place in the global ranking. Russia has taken fifth place.
According to data from BarthHaas, a German company that has researched the beer market since 1912, this is the second time that the Russians have surpassed the Germans in beverage production.
The first time was in the late 2000s. However, Germany regained the lead in 2013 and held it until 2023.
The report highlights that, in some cases, such as that of Russia, the data is based on estimates due to the increasing difficulty in obtaining accurate information from the local industry.
Factors Explain Change in the Scenario
Thomas Raiser, managing director of BarthHaas, pointed out that Russia is importing less beer. This creates space for the local industry to grow and fill the market that was previously served by foreign companies.
In Germany, however, the situation is different. The country has been facing a constant decline in domestic beer consumption for over ten years, according to the Federal Statistical Office.
This contradicts expectations for an increase in production due to UEFA Euro 2024, held on German soil.
Among the factors explaining the retraction are the aging population, competition from other beverages, and the declining purchasing power of consumers.
Additionally, another 27 of the 43 countries analyzed in Europe also recorded a decline in production in 2024.
China and Brazil Remain Global Leaders
On the global stage, China continues to be the largest beer producer in the world, with 34 billion liters.
The United States follows closely behind, with over 18 billion, although both have seen a decline of about 5% in production.
Brazil maintained its third place in the global ranking, with 14.7 billion liters. This represents 8% of the total global production. Mexico appears right after, with 14.5 billion, now followed by Russia.
Even with the decline in production, Germany remains the largest hop supplier in the world. However, the number of producers has fallen to under a thousand, one of the lowest levels in history.
