The Brewery in Paraná and Malting Plant in Rio Grande do Sul of Ambev Achieved 90% Reduction of Carbon Emissions and Neutralization of the Remaining 10%
Yesterday, Thursday (09/30), Ambev announced the launch of a carbon-neutral brewery and malting plant in Brazil, the company’s first. The units, which have been operating for the past few years, reduced their greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere by 90% and neutralized the remaining 10%. The company invested R$ 137 million in the initiative over the past five years. Read this news: Ambev has over 100 job openings, internships, talent bank, and young apprentice positions

Carbon Emission Neutrality
To achieve carbon emission neutrality at the brewery in Paraná and malting plant in Rio Grande do Sul, Ambev installed biomass boilers, implemented biogas energy recovery processes, started using electricity from renewable sources, and replaced traditional forklifts with electric ones.
The neutralization of the remaining 10% was possible thanks to carbon credits purchased by the company. “We invest in projects that compensate for residual emissions from our production chain,” explains Rodrigo Figueiredo, vice president of sustainability and supplies at Ambev.

More Ambev Units Will Be Carbon Neutral
According to the company, four more breweries will also operate with neutral carbon emissions by the end of 2021. Ambev expects to achieve 100% neutrality in its units in the coming years, but does not disclose the expected maximum timeframe for this to happen.
By 2025, Ambev plans for 100% of the electricity purchased to originate from renewable sources, along with a 25% reduction in carbon emissions across its value chain. The company also aims to use returnable packaging or mainly made from recycled materials in all its products.

Ambev, a leader in beverage manufacturing, announced it will build 48 solar power plants to supply 94 distribution centers in Brazil. The plan is part of the company’s commitment that by 2025, it will consume 100% renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions by 25%. A total of 51,000 solar panels will be installed, with a generation capacity of 19 megawatts (MW), enough to supply 15,000 homes.
The solar plants will be built in 21 states and the Federal District, where Ambev operates. The project will be undertaken in cooperation with Solution, GD Solar, and Gera Energia, which will reduce 46,000 tons of CO² annually. They will be responsible for the entire project and will deliver energy to Ambev under a 10-year contract. After that period, the beverage makers will have the option to purchase the units.
Last month, the first solar plant of the project was inaugurated in Anápolis, Goiás. The plant is built in the shape of the Budweiser brand and will provide services on-site for the four distribution centers of the company. By December, an additional 20 units will be inaugurated, and the remaining ones are expected to be operational by the end of the first quarter of next year.
Leonardo Coelho, director of Sustainability and Supplies at Ambev, emphasizes that the solar project idea arose from an initiative to supply energy for the group’s brewery. Last year, Ambev’s Budweiser announced the construction of an 80 MW wind farm in Bahia. The undertaking will be built in cooperation with the investment manager Casaforte, which is expected to be operational by early 2022 and will provide 100% of the consumption of the five breweries producing Budweiser in the country.
