The beverage manufacturer Ambev chose Carambeí, in the Campos Gerais, a city located 294 kilometers from Londrina, for the installation of Brazil’s largest sustainable glass factory, with an investment of over R$ 870 million. The announcement was made last Thursday (23), and the letter of intent had been signed with the State Government at the end of last year.
More Than 2,000 Jobs Will Be Created by Ambev
Construction will begin still in 2022, generating 1,500 job openings during the works. The sustainable glass factory will produce bottles from the recycling of collected glass shards, resulting from partnerships with reverse logistics companies and cooperatives. Long neck bottles of 300, 600, and 1000 ml will be produced for various company labels, such as Brahma, Budweiser, Skol, Stella Artois, Spaten, and Becks.
The production capacity of the Ambev unit is 500 million bottles annually, depending on the type. The company’s investment will supply breweries in Paraná and several other states.
Ambev Makes New Investments in Sustainability
According to Elisângela Pedroso, the mayor of the city, this is the result of hard work from the entire Ambev team and the state, which has been supporting the company with information sharing since December of last year.
This is a historic milestone, a great step for the industrialization of the municipality. This is an achievement for Campos Gerais, Carambeí, and Paraná. Ambev’s investment in Paraná focuses on improving reverse logistics and the circular economy and is linked to the company’s goal of having all its products in returnable packaging or made from recycled content by 2025.
Sustainable Glass Factory Will Be Built Using Only Renewable Energy
Glass, a material widely used as packaging for beverages, has great recycling potential. When recycled, it not only boosts the reverse logistics chain but also generates positive impacts such as reducing energy consumption and CO₂ emissions released into the atmosphere.
The unit will be established using only renewable electrical energy sources and will be equipped to operate with biofuels. In addition, it will have a station for treating 100% of the generated effluents and reusing the water used in the process, ensuring high energy and water efficiency.
According to Ambev, the company’s first glass factory, which was inaugurated in 2008 in Rio de Janeiro, is currently the glass factory that operates with the highest percentage of recycled material in the country. This year it produced the first completely recycled glass bottle in Brazil on an industrial scale.
In addition to the new glass factory in Carambeí, the company also has facilities in Ponta Grossa and Curitiba, distribution centers in various cities, and partnerships with the agribusiness sector in Guarapuava.
