Americanas states that the process of opening and closing stores is part of the normal course of retail, added to the company's transformation plan, which foresees short and medium-term adjustments, focusing on profitability and business optimization and to meet consumer behaviors in certain regions.
The opening of a unit in Eusébio, Ceará, reinforces this initiative. Americanas closes more than 200 stores, however, the company reiterates that it has around 1.600 stores spread across the country, in addition to the website and app, focused on offering the best experience for its customers.
The crisis that almost declared Americanas bankrupt
In January 2023, it was revealed that Lojas Americanas presented “inconsistencies in accounting entries that could be around R$20 billion.
To avoid bankruptcy of Americanas, the company entered into judicial recovery and presented its final plan judicial recovery in December 2023. The real debt presented in the plan was more than R$50 billion, including a labor debt of R$82,9 million and a fraud of results of R$25,2 billion at the end of 2022.
In the figures for the third quarter of 2024, even with the closure of Americanas, the company showed a profit of R$10,3 billion, reversing a loss of R$1,63 billion seen in the same period of the previous year. Americanas' net revenue in the third quarter of 2024 was R$3,19 billion, stable compared to the same period in 2023.
Americanas Stores Strategy in the Northeast
Americanas is closing more than 200 stores and, with plans for 2025, the retailer, which already has more than 1.600 stores in more than 800 Brazilian cities, plans to expand even further, with a focus on the Northeast region. This expansion plan will initially be implemented in a moderate manner.
Americanas plans to invest not only in expanding its physical points of sale, but also to expand its portfolio of financial services and resume credit options, which were previously available on the company's platforms. For this expansion projected for this year, the retailer plans to open a few units in the Northeast and possibly in the Midwest, in order to test the concept and flow.
