Discover How Many Accidents Occurred in The Oil Sector in 2024, According to Alarming Data Released by ANP.

The oil exploration in Brazil faces a concerning scenario in 2024, with alarming numbers released by the ANP (National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels). According to the agency’s report, 731 accidents were recorded involving exploration and production activities of oil.

This data was recently released in March 2025, according to the website Agência Brasil.

This number, therefore, represents a significant increase compared to the 718 incidents that occurred in 2023. Thus, this growing trend draws the sector’s attention, raising concerns about operational safety and environmental impacts.

Dramatic Increase in Serious Injuries

Furthermore, the detailed survey by ANP pointed out that, out of the total accidents in 2024, an impressive 183 people were injured. Of these, 78 had serious cases, highlighting the tragic occurrence of one death.

Compared to the previous year, there was an increase in serious injury cases. Therefore, this scenario demands immediate interventions from companies and regulatory bodies.

Devastating Environmental Impacts Revealed by ANP

In addition to alarming human damages, there were also significant environmental damages. According to ANP, discharges into the environment totaled an incredible 52,910 liters of oil just in 2024.

Moreover, other leaks included hazardous substances, such as 8,630 liters of synthetic drilling fluids. The situation becomes even graver with the discharge of more 23,100 liters of additives used in these operations.

These leaks clearly show the negative impact of exploration and production activities on the environment. Therefore, it becomes essential to urgently review practices and regulations to prevent even greater environmental damage.

Worrisome History Demands Immediate Changes

Historically, since 2012, according to official data from ANP itself, the oil sector has already accumulated 43 deaths. And as if that were not enough, there have also been alarming 666 serious injuries recorded.

These numbers make it clear, therefore, that it is urgent to reinforce preventive measures and stringent oversight of operations. ANP needs to act quickly.

Experts state that it is necessary to increase transparency and environmental responsibility of operating companies. Thus, they suggest that ANP expand its regulatory role.

Severe sanctions need to be applied to companies that violate safety regulations. Additionally, it is essential to require more effective plans to mitigate risks in exploration and production operations.

Transparency and Stricter Oversight by ANP Are Fundamental

ANP, therefore, plays a crucial role in this concerning situation. As a regulatory body, it must ensure greater transparency and environmental responsibility from operating companies.

Thus, there needs to be a strict application of sanctions against companies that neglect safety. Moreover, the agency must constantly strengthen its oversight capacity, ensuring frequent training and inspections.

Experts also suggest that educational campaigns and regular training should be mandatory for all operators. Only then can it be possible to significantly reduce these alarming numbers.

The current situation, released by ANP in March 2025, serves as a warning. It demonstrates, thus, that oil exploration in Brazil urgently needs to improve its safety practices.

The companies in the sector, therefore, need to immediately take greater responsibility for human lives and the environment. In this way, it is hoped that accidents can be avoided, protecting lives and preserving valuable environmental resources.

It remains to reflect: how many more accidents will be necessary before real changes are put into practice by companies and more rigorously enforced by ANP? Data from Agência Brasil
