Self-Employed Women Can Now Request Benefits Even With Just One Payment to INSS

New INSS rule guarantees maternity salary with just one contribution, making it easier for self-employed women to access the benefit. The measure expands social security coverage and allows more women to receive financial support during pregnancy, adoption, or legal custody of a child.

The change is already in effect and can be requested by any individual contributor who has made at least one valid contribution to the INSS. The condition is to be with the quality of active insured at the time of the event that gives rise to the benefit.

Who Is Entitled to Maternity Salary Under the New Rule?

New INSS rule facilitates access to maternity salary and strengthens women’s protection

The self-employed worker can receive the maternity salary even with just one contribution to INSS, as long as she is registered as an insured person at the time of childbirth, adoption or custody for adoption purposes. This represents an important change, especially for women who do not have a formal employment relationship.

The rule applies only to individual contributors, optional contributors, or special insured persons. Employees with formal employment contracts continue to be governed by CLT rules, with benefits guaranteed directly by the company or INSS, as applicable.

How to Request the Benefit?

The request for maternity salary can be made 100% digitally through the Meu INSS website or app. The required documents are:

  • Identity document with photo and CPF
  • Birth certificate or adoption term
  • Bank details for benefit deposit

No in-person appointment is necessary, except in cases of document pending or specific analysis.

Why Is This Change Important?

Before denied, maternity salary can now be released with just one payment to INSS
Without valid contribution and within the deadline, self-employed individuals may lose their right to maternity salary

This flexibility ensures access to the benefit for a group of women who previously fell through the cracks because they could not maintain regular contributions. The inclusion of self-employed workers in maternity salary with just one contribution is an important step toward promoting social and economic equity, especially in informal work contexts.

According to INSS itself, the goal of the measure is to encourage the formalization of contributions even among those who work independently, creating a protective link for situations of leave such as maternity.

What Precautions Are Necessary?

Despite the ease, it is essential that the contributor has at least one valid payment and within the insured quality deadline. If the contribution is delayed or outside the validity period, the request may be denied.

Additionally, experts recommend that the worker regularizes her situation in advance and tracks the progress of the request through the official INSS portal, avoiding surprises.
