Toyota SUV Achieved A Point Victory In August, But In The Accumulated Year, The Volkswagen T-Cross Remains The Absolute Leader With Over 15,000 Units Ahead Of Rivals.
The Toyota Corolla Cross surprised in August 2025 and dethroned the Volkswagen T-Cross in the monthly competition of the best-selling SUVs in Brazil. According to Fenabrave, there were 7,737 registrations against 7,702, a difference of only 35 units. This achievement held symbolic weight, as the Corolla Cross surpassed the leader for the first time this year.
But when analyzing the accumulated data from January to August, the scenario presents a different reality. The T-Cross remains the clear leader with 61,252 units sold, nearly 15,000 more than the runner-up Hyundai Creta (45,680) and also above the Corolla Cross, which ranks third nationally with 44,692.
The August Matchup
The August results showed a balance in the leadership of the compact and midsize SUV segment.

Besides the Corolla Cross and T-Cross, the Hyundai Creta closed the month with 6,649 units sold, confirming the model’s strength among Brazilian consumers.
Right behind were Fiat Fastback (5,040) and Chevrolet Tracker (4,942).
Other highlights included the Nissan Kicks (4,740), Jeep Compass (4,717) and Volkswagen Nivus (4,557).
Meanwhile, the Honda HR-V, which was once one of the most sought-after models in the category, finished in just 10th place, with 4,028 units, repeating the weak performance that has been dragging since June.
Ranking Accumulated in 2025
The landscape of accumulations up to August shows a consolidated hierarchy.
After the T-Cross, Creta and Corolla Cross, the Honda HR-V (40,113), the Chevrolet Tracker (39,152), and the Jeep Compass (37,182) appear.
Fiat Fastback, Nissan Kicks, Volkswagen Nivus, and Fiat Pulse complete the national top 10 of SUVs.
This result reinforces the dominance of the major brands in this segment and shows how the T-Cross manages to maintain a consistent advantage even with monthly fluctuations.
The German brand continues to benefit from a wide dealer network and competitive offerings of versions.
Growth of The Automotive Market
From January to August 2025, Brazil registered 1,667,295 new vehicles, a growth of 2.77% compared to the same period in 2024.
For cars, the increase was 2.91%, totaling 1,232,600 units, while light commercial vehicles rose 4.09% with 343,506 registrations.
The only sector in decline was that of trucks and buses, which fell 3.59%, with 91,189 units.
According to the president of Fenabrave, Arcelio Junior, high interest rates and economic slowdown remain obstacles.
Still, the entity maintains a growth forecast of 5% for 2025, which would mean nearly 2.8 million vehicles sold throughout the year.
Economic Challenges for The Sector
Economist Tereza Fernandez pointed out that both external and internal factors could pressure the market.
Externally, Donald Trump’s return to the presidency of the United States creates uncertainties about trade tariffs. In Brazil, the high cost of credit and fiscal fragility weigh heavily.
Even in light of these risks, the sector sees the Legal Framework for Guarantees as a tool to expand credit and sustain demand, even in a high-interest environment.
The month of August showed that the Toyota Corolla Cross may threaten the T-Cross’s point leadership, but the accumulated numbers reinforce the hegemony of Volkswagen, which continues to hold a wide lead over its competitors.
The competition confirms the strength of the SUV market, now the most decisive for the performance of the automotive industry in Brazil.
What do you think, does the Corolla Cross have the strength to take the lead from the T-Cross by the end of 2025, or will Volkswagen remain isolated at the top? Share your opinion in the comments—we want to hear your view on this rivalry that drives the market.
