Jean Paul Prates’ Colleagues and Other Legislators Point to the Senator as the Leading Candidate for the Presidency of Petrobras. The Executive Has Been Considered for the State-Owned Company Since the Beginning of the Transition to Lula’s Government.
With the arrival of the new Lula Government approaching in the coming weeks, discussions about the future of Petrobras continue to intensify on this Monday, (12/26). The main concern at the moment is who will lead the administration of the state-owned company in the new government. Jean Paul Prates, senator from Rio Grande do Norte at the end of his term, is one of the leading candidates to become the company’s president, due to his experience and expertise in the fuel sector.
Presidency and Administration of Petrobras May Be Directed to Current Senator Jean Paul Prates in the New Lula Government, Following Support from Legislators
Last Wednesday, (12/21), Senator Jean Paul Prates delivered a farewell speech that, due to the participation of his political colleagues, turned into a significant gesture of support for the executive as the next president of Petrobras.
The senator’s name has been considered for the state company’s administration for several months, following a long and constant turnover of presidents at the company throughout 2022. Jean has become one of the main candidates for the position, due to his experience in the oil and gas segment, as the Lula Government has already stated that it seeks a president who understands oil.

Petrobras implements a severe adjustment and confirms a 55% increase in the price of aviation kerosene with a proposal for installment payments for the companies.
Thus, during his speech, he was interrupted by his colleagues and praised for his term, with emphasis on the fact that he is an excellent recommendation for the role of Petrobras administration.
Petista Paulo Paim (RS) said he trusts that the elected president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), will call Prates to lead some ministry or Petrobras. Meanwhile, Jorge Kajuru (Podemos-GO) jokingly claimed he would be angry if the Lula Government did not invite the senator to the presidency of the state-owned company, as he would be the best option for the leadership.
Another supporter was Omar Aziz (PSD-AM), who highlighted Prates’ deep knowledge of the oil and gas sector. Despite being considered for the presidency, the senator was being hindered by the State-Owned Companies Law, which required a three-year quarantine for political agents.
However, with this part removed in the amendment made by Congress last week, the entire scenario contributes to Jean Paul Prates becoming the administrator and president of Petrobras.
The Senator Was Instrumental in Regulatory Framework for Offshore Wind and Understands the Energy Market, Making Him an Excellent Choice for President of the State-Owned Company
Senator Prates is considered for the presidency of Petrobras because he is one of the legislators who played a key role in the regulatory framework for offshore wind energy generation.
He has been fighting and contributing to implement new renewable energy projects throughout Brazil for several years. Thus, the Lula Government may leverage his experience and relevance to bring a new focus on the energy market to Petrobras.
The current senator also participated in the former Petrobras International (Braspetro) in the 1980s and was involved in drafting the Petroleum Law in 1997. Besides being one of the main candidates for the presidency regarding the management aspect, he is also frequently discussed to boost renewable energy projects in Brazil after taking over the state-owned company.
Now, we just have to wait for the Lula Government’s decision next year.
