End of Windows 7 After 15 Years of History? The Operating System Most Loved by Users Comes to an End, and Its Versions Will Stop Receiving Updates. Discover What Changes and What Are the Alternatives for Those Who Still Use Windows 7.

The life cycle of Windows 7 has officially come to an end, with the POSReady version ceasing to receive support from Microsoft last week. This means that, from now on, there will be no more security updates or fixes for this operating system, permanently concluding its journey. The POSReady version was widely used in point-of-sale devices, such as payment terminals in stores and self-service kiosks in restaurants. With the end of support, these devices may become vulnerable to security flaws and incompatibilities, requiring migration to more recent and secure systems.

Understand the End of Windows 7 After 15 Years of History

Windows 7, perhaps one of the most beloved versions of the operating system, had two other phases of end of support. The first phase of the end of Windows 7 occurred in January 2020, when Microsoft ended updates for the operating system. The second occurred in January 2023, when the paid service with extra updates ended.

Windows 7 comes to an end, but still has a small number of users; however, the end of updates or major applications cutting support are present in the operating system. Even before the complete end of Windows 7, applications like Steam and Chrome ended their association with the system. The gaming store stopped updating its version for Windows 7 at the beginning of this year.

As a result, the Steam client may stop working at any time, and it will no longer be possible to play there. However, it is important to highlight that no one would use a Windows 7 POS to play on Steam. Chrome stopped updates for Windows 7 in January 2023. Even Microsoft’s own browser, Edge, stopped updating its version on the operating system in December 2022.

Windows 7 Comes to an End, but Can Still Be Used

Even though it will stop receiving updates, the certainty is that Windows 7 POSReady will remain active. Point-of-sale (POS) operating systems tend to be more long-lived, as their primary function is to handle orders and manage the cash register. While the POS program is functioning, there is no reason to update it. With the end of extended support, security updates for Windows 7 come to a definitive end.

This means that, from now on, if there are severe flaws in the system, such as a kernel exploit, there will be no more fixes or patches. For those who still insist on using this old version of Windows, security is a serious concern. Soon, Windows 10 will also see its main support end, with version 22H2 being one of the last.

However, some special editions, such as Windows 10 LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel), will continue to receive critical updates for a longer time, aimed primarily at corporate users.

These LTSC versions are targeted at companies that want a longer lifecycle and greater stability without needing to update as frequently. This includes Windows 10 LTSC 201, equivalent to version 21H2 of Windows 10.

Windows 11 Is Constantly Improved

As the end of Windows 7 approaches, Microsoft has just released two updates for Windows 11 that bring bug fixes to the start menu, improvements to the Snipping Tool, and new split-screen layout options.

Starting with the Dev version, the new build is 26120.2130 with version KB5044400, which fixes issues such as Mica transparency not working when using a slideshow as a background, clipboard history disappearing, live caption failures, among others.

The new Beta Channel version is KB504498, identified by build 22635.4371, which brings more app recommendations in the shortcuts when hovering the mouse over the restore button. The shortcut “Narrator Key+Ctrl+X” to copy what was said last is now also compatible with the new Outlook app.
