According to Pablo di Si, “we defined (the investment) and have already halted production at our factory in Taubaté to prepare the new platform.” The executive did not provide details on the products, but it is known that one of them is the Polo Track, a new entry model for the brand in Brazil.

The Taubaté factory currently produces two compact cars, the Sedan Voyage and the hatchback Gol.

So far this year, Volkswagen has become the best-selling brand in Brazil, replacing General Motors Co (GM.N) after many years, as part of the production interruption of GM in Brazil was higher than Volkswagen’s due to a global chip shortage.

Volkswagen ‘Throws In The Towel’, Gives Up Being The ‘Largest Manufacturer In The World’, And Hands Over The Title To Rival Toyota

The multinational Volkswagen bows out of the battle with Toyota for the crown of the automotive industry. Being the largest car manufacturer in the world is no longer a goal, as stated by the chief executive responsible for the production and logistics areas of the German automaker, Christian Vollmer, in an interview with Automobilwoche. VW had been number one since 2016, but lost the title to its rival last year.

The automotive industry is changing drastically around the world for the sake of the environment, leading Volkswagen to shift its strategic decision to focus on volume and defeat the Japanese.

Now, the German automaker will wholly concentrate its efforts on internal improvements, abandon combustion engines, and focus on electric cars – an area in which the company is already ahead of rival Toyota.

With Volkswagen “throwing in the towel,” the Japanese Toyota is expected to remain the largest automaker in terms of volume and lead the automobile market over the coming years.
