After Sadi’s Suicide, During Event with Participation of Minister and Governor, Sergipe Government Adopts Measures to Lower Natural Gas Prices.
It was published in the Official Gazette of Sergipe, last Friday, 05, a decree that reduces the tax burden of the Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services (ICMS) regarding natural gas, for operations that allocate this product to companies located in Sergipe, after the suicide of businessman Sadi Gitz on July 4, who had his company bankrupt due to the high cost of gas that powered his company.
“We, from the state government, will modify all the regulation of gas, to attract more enterprises so that we can create our port region, in Barra dos Coqueiros. This entire region will be prepared along with its infrastructure, to welcome new enterprises. Until then, we will attract enterprises so that, when we effectively have gas exploration, due to what is being discovered in our basin, we will already have the entire environment prepared for development to happen from this new era of gas in Sergipe,” the governor emphasized.

The initiative is part of a set of actions aimed at the economic development of the state related to the natural gas sector, specifically when the product is destined for industries involved in the Sergipe Industrial Development Program (PSDI), as well as for industries that come to establish themselves in Sergipe.
As its first measure, the government will offer a reduction in the ICMS calculation base on operations of the producing company (Petrobras) for Sergás, resulting in a decrease in the tax burden from 18% to 12%, in addition to the deferral of ICMS, exempting payment on Sergás operations intended for PSDI industries.
As a result of the series of measures adopted by the Sergipe government, there is a prospect of a possible reduction in the final price of natural gas per cubic meter by a margin of between 14% and 20%.
Port Industrial Region
During the announcement of the measures, the governor also signed the forwarding to the Legislative Assembly of Sergipe of the Bill that creates the Port Industrial Region with the municipalities of Barra dos Coqueiros, Santo Amaro das Brotas, Maruim, and Laranjeiras. The goal is to facilitate the installation of industries focused on gas.
“There is no shortage of good news for Sergipe, there is no shortage of good news for Aracaju, and for the rest of the country it is a great example. Natural gas must be a solution, and it is in this direction that we are moving, and Sergipe, in my view, is at the forefront. In early 2020, we will have the largest thermoelectric plant in Latin America operating here in Aracaju with 1.5 gigawatts, it is truly a fabulous enterprise, and now that the country is proposing a new gas market, Sergipe will certainly be a great example for the other states of the federation,” emphasized the Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque.
