The company ArcelorMittal has just announced that it has reached an agreement with CSP’s shareholders for the purchase of the company located in the state of Ceará for a total value of R$ 2.2 billion, taking another step to grow in the national steel industry. All of the company’s facilities are located in the state of Ceará and have been operating since 2016, focusing on the production of steel plates ever since. Additionally, CSP operates a blast furnace with a capacity of three million tons with access to the Port of Pecém, located 10 kilometers from the plant.
Thus, Aditya Mittal, CEO of ArcelorMittal, commented on the importance of the company’s purchase and said that “At CSP, we are acquiring a modern, efficient, established, and profitable business that will further enhance our position in Brazil and immediately adds value to ArcelorMittal. There is significant potential to decarbonize the asset, given the state of Ceará’s ambition to develop a low-cost green hydrogen hub and the enormous potential the region has for solar and wind power generation.”
Learn About the Strategic Benefits the Company Expects from the CSP Purchase for Its Growth in the National Steel Industry
The purchase of CSP by ArcelorMittal comes at a time of expansionist race to gain even more relevance in the national steel industry, focusing on the production and marketing of steel plates across Brazil and the world. Thus, the company highlighted the main strategic points that the company seeks with the billion-dollar transaction for the acquisition of the Ceará-based steel mill.
Among them, there is the opportunity to expand ArcelorMittal’s presence in the Brazilian steel industry and capitalize on the significant planned investment from third parties to form a clean electricity and green hydrogen hub in Pecém.
Additionally, the company also expects to increase about 3 million tons of production capacity of high-quality plates with cost competitiveness, as well as generate over US$ 50 million in identified synergies, including SG&A, procurement, and process optimization.
Now, ArcelorMittal awaits further approvals from CSP’s board and final approval from CADE by the end of 2022 to proceed with the acquisition of the Ceará-based company and finalize the billion-dollar transaction.
