An invention emerged in the school environment drew attention by combining technology, discretion, and personal safety in an everyday accessory, amid the debate about gender violence and protection solutions for women.

A student from Limpopo province in South Africa gained recognition for developing a disguised safety device in the form of an earring for use in risky situations.

Named Alerting Earpiece, the invention was presented by Bohlale Mphahlele when she was 16 years old and combines, in a discreet accessory, features to capture an aggressor’s image, identify the user’s location, and send help requests without drawing attention.

The project emerged amid the debate about gender violence in the country and is still seeking support to advance from the prototype phase to a version ready for large-scale use.

Safety earring for women in risk situations

Mphahlele’s proposal stems from a recurring situation in cases of threat: the victim does not always manage to scream, use a cellphone, or resort to visible equipment.

Therefore, the student focused on an everyday object, with a common appearance, that could be activated discreetly.

According to the description already published about the project, the accessory functions as an earring and was designed to record the aggressor’s face and send an alert to previously connected devices.

In the disclosed model, activation occurs through a small button attached to the accessory.

When activated, the system captures images and shares the user’s location.

In reports about the invention, Mphahlele stated that the goal was to create a tool capable of alerting authorities or trusted individuals when the victim was in danger, as well as allowing tracking of her movements.

The proposal, according to the creator, can also gather useful elements for a subsequent response to the case.

Gender violence in South Africa

The development of the Alerting Earpiece is linked to the crime scenario and cases of violence against women and human trafficking in South Africa.

This context helps explain the project’s impact.

A national study on gender violence in the country, with data from 2022, indicated that 33.1% of women aged 18 and older reported having suffered physical violence throughout their lives, while 9.8% said they had been victims of sexual violence.

In the aggregated data, 35.5% reported having experienced physical and/or sexual violence at some point.

The numbers help to frame the environment in which the invention was presented.

In an official statement published by the South African government in June 2025, Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga addressed femicide and gender violence as a persistent problem in the country.

The text mentions the national survey and reinforces that millions of women have already been affected by physical or sexual assaults.

In this scenario, initiatives aimed at personal protection have begun to receive attention from schools, authorities, and organizations related to the topic.

Scientific fair highlighted Bohlale Mphahlele’s project

Mphahlele’s invention was presented at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, one of the main student science fairs in South Africa.

At the event, the Alerting Earpiece received a bronze medal in the engineering, electronics, and embedded systems category.

The recognition increased the visibility of the project and led local authorities to comment on the initiative.

At the time, the then provincial secretary of Education in Limpopo, Polly Boshielo, related the creation to addressing violence that also affects students in the region.

Since then, the story of the young inventor has continued to circulate in reports and profiles about social innovation.

In more recent publications, she is linked to the effort to transform the prototype into a commercially viable product.

There are records that the creator continues to seek funding, technical support, and partnerships to develop a market-ready version.

Information has also been released that she is deepening her training in the technology field, in an attempt to strengthen the technical foundation of the project and increase the chances of implementation.

Prototype development and market entry

The interest surrounding the device is linked to the combination of discretion and practicality.

While other personal safety equipment may be visible or depend on immediate access to a phone, the Alerting Earpiece was designed to integrate into daily routines.

Still, the transition from a prototype to a product available on a large scale involves steps such as technical testing, production, cost definition, data protection, and potential integration with service networks.

The publicly available information so far indicates that this transition is still underway.

The consulted material confirms that the project was designed to function as an everyday accessory, without significantly altering the user’s routine.

The proposal has also begun to be mentioned in texts about entrepreneurship, innovation, and women’s protection.

What has been confirmed about the Alerting Earpiece

So far, the most consistent public information confirms that the Alerting Earpiece was created by Bohlale Mphahlele while still in school in Limpopo, as a response to gender violence and human trafficking.

There is also a record that the project was showcased at a science fair and that the proposal includes image capture and alert sending with location.

Recent sources also indicate that the young woman continues to seek support to try to expand the development of the invention.

On the other hand, there is not enough public detail in the consulted sources about industrial stage, estimated price, launch date, any tests with police forces, or formal commercialization schedule.
