Requiring the CPF at Pharmacies May Export Personal Data; Understand the Risks and Your Rights as a Consumer

Did you know that providing your CPF at the pharmacy may put your personal data at risk? This common practice in various establishments has led to investigations, notably by the Regional Prosecutor’s Office for Citizens’ Rights in Rio de Janeiro, which is probing into the improper use of this information. The main concern is the creation of databases with consumers’ purchasing history, which could be sold to third-party companies, according to the FDR website.

What Are the Risks of Providing the CPF at the Pharmacy?

By providing your CPF, you may expose your personal data to various risks, such as:

  • Targeted Marketing: Companies may use your data to send personalized offers and promotions, which can be considered intrusive.
  • Data Sales: There is a risk that your data may be sold to other companies without your consent.
  • Frauds: Your data could be used to commit fraud, such as opening bank accounts in your name or making unauthorized purchases.

Expert Marina Costa, a contributor to FDR, warns that especially seniors over 60 should be particularly cautious when sharing data at pharmacies.

Your Rights as a Consumer

The General Data Protection Law (LGPD) grants important rights to consumers, including:

  • Access to Your Data: You have the right to know what information about you is stored.
  • Data Correction: If any data is incorrect, you can request a correction.
  • Data Deletion: You can request the deletion of your information from databases.
  • Opposition to Data Processing: You can oppose the use of your data for certain purposes.

What to Do Before Providing Your CPF?

Before providing your data, follow these guidelines:

  • Question the Pharmacy: Ask specifically about data collection and how it will be used.
  • Read the Privacy Policy: Check how your data will be handled, ensuring transparency in collection.
  • Report Irregularities: If you notice that your rights have been violated, report it to Procon or consumer protection agencies.

Remember: data collection is permitted by law but must be done transparently, with your explicit consent. Protect yourself and stay alert to the use of your personal information!
