Equinor Joins Energy Giants to Explore Massive Potential in the Campos Basin Aiming to Strengthen the Brazilian Gas Market.
In the growing pursuit of excellence in the energy sector, Equinor presents its bold ambitions for the Campos Basin. In cooperation with renowned names such as Repsol Sinopec Brasil and Petrobras, the oil giant aims to shape Brazil’s energy future.
Field of Opportunities: Raia Manta and Raia Pintada
Located 200 kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, the BM-C-33 concession in the Campos Basin is a reservoir of potential, covering water depths of up to 2,900 meters. It is here that Equinor, along with the consortium, revealed its plans for the fields provisionally named Raia Manta and Raia Pintada. Confirmation of the names is pending regulatory approval.
Senior Vice President of Project Development, Trond Bokn, highlights Equinor’s commitment to Brazil: “These fields are strategically aligned with our aspirations in a country where we have already established a strong presence. Our team, in collaboration with our partners, will bring additional expertise to ensure safe and effective development.”

Robots already operate oil rigs without humans, connect pipelines on their own, and inspect platforms in the dark, and the world’s largest drilling company plans to cut 75% of the crew at each well.

In the 1970s, oil became a weapon of war and paralyzed the entire world, and now the same thing is happening again with Iran closing off the route for 20% of the planet’s fuel.

When oil prices rise, the gas station increases prices the next day, but when it drops by 13% at once, no one explains why gasoline remains at the same price for months.

The largest fuel distributor in Brazil has just been forced to import diesel and gasoline on its own after Petrobras reduced its monthly deliveries.
Technology and Innovation: The Future of Gas Production
The project stands out for its use of an FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading Unit). This vessel is designed to process gas and oil/condensate, meeting sales standards and eliminating the need for additional treatments on land. With an impressive capacity of 16 million cubic meters of gas daily, the FPSO aims for an average output of 14 million cubic meters per day.
Raia Manta and Raia Pintada are not just gas fields; they are pillars for the Brazilian gas market. Equinor’s president in Brazil, Veronica Coelho, points to the potential impact on the Brazilian energy landscape: “These fields could meet up to 15% of the country’s total gas demand when operational, triggering a revolution in energy security and boosting the economy with job creation.”
The fields offer more than just energy potential. With a total estimated investment of US$ 9 billion, they have the capacity to generate up to 50,000 local jobs throughout their lifespan.
Connection to the Coast: The Commercialization Route
Breaking barriers, Raia Manta and Raia Pintada will be the pioneers in Brazil to process offshore gas, connecting directly to the national grid. This innovation eliminates the need for processing on land. The marketed gas will be transported via a 200 km pipeline, linking the FPSO to Cabiúnas in Macaé, Rio de Janeiro.
Also standing out for its environmental commitment, the fields will feature low carbon intensity, optimized by gas turbine combined cycles on the FPSO.
