A factory in Bahia produces the largest wind turbine propellers in the country, measuring 84 meters in length. Soon, the northeastern state will begin production of 120-meter blades, setting a new world record for the largest wind turbine blade in Latin America.

The Secretary of Economic Development, Angelo Almeida, visited last Thursday (18), the Sinoma Blade manufacturing unit in Camaçari, the largest manufacturer of propellers used to generate wind power of the world. According to the Director of Operations, Pedro Santos, the Bahia factory currently produces 84-meter wind turbine propellers, the largest manufactured in the country to date.

Sinoma Blade Factory in Bahia will produce 150 wind turbine propellers during 2024

There are ambitious plans to produce 90-meter-long wind turbine blades, and by the end of 2025, it is expected to begin manufacturing 120-meter blades. Xue Li, the General Manager of the factory, participated in the technical visit. Angelo Almeida highlighted that the installation of the Sinoma factory in Bahia is the result of a mission led by governor Jerônimo Rodrigues in Beijing, China, in April last year.

One year after this mission, Angelo carried out this technical visit to personally evaluate the unit's infrastructure. The implementation of this factory in the state of Bahia represents a significant milestone, especially due to the complexity of its production process.

According to the Director of Operations, the factory in Bahia is producing its 15th blade and a total of 150 wind turbine propellers will be manufactured this year. The first propeller will leave the Bahia unit in October. The director thanked Secretary Angelo for the visit and the cordiality he has always shown in the relationship between Sinoma and the government of the State of Bahia.

The company is pleased to be in Camacari and being able to provide the surrounding society with jobs and change in the city's social scene. A Sinoma is the first factory set up outside of China and ensuring its success is essential, so it is working very hard to make this really happen.

What is the biggest wind turbine in the world?

The wind turbine propellers produced in Bahia are the largest in Brazil. However, The largest wind turbine in the world today is the MingYang Smart Energy (MySE) 16-260, which is located on the coast of Fujian Province, China, with a diameter total 260 meters.

The turbine has been operating since July 2023 and broke the previous record for the wind turbine built at the Zhangpu Liuao wind farm on the Liuao Peninsula, which is 252 meters in diameter. In other words, the MySE 16-260 is 8 meters longer than the previous turbine.

The engine and generator housed atop the MySE 152-16's 260-meter tower weighs an incredible 385 tons, each of the three 123-meter wind turbine blades adds another 54 tons, hanging off one side of the generator shaft.

With each complete revolution, the turbine sweeps around 50 square meters of air (the equivalent of seven football fields), each revolution sending up to 34,2 kWh of energy to the Chinese energy system. Annually, the model is estimated to contribute around 66 GWh.

Brazil leads wind energy in the Americas

Brazil, the United States and Mexico emerge as leaders in wind energy production in the Americas, according to recent data from the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). As a whole, North, South and Central America accounted for 25% of the total installed global capacity of this energy in 2018.

According to GWEC, the total installed capacity of wind energy in the Americas now totals 135 GW – an increase of 12% compared to 2017. The expectation is that the search for this type of energy in the region will continue, and the organization noted the addition of 60GW in new wind capacity between 2019 and 2023.
