With The Low Import Of Fertilizers Due To The Conflict Between Ukraine And Russia, President Jair Bolsonaro Is Seeking New Alternatives For Potassium Mining In The Amazon, Including In Indigenous Lands
The Conflicts Between Ukraine And Russia Brought A Huge Deficit In Fertilizer Imports To The Brazilian Market And A Series Of Discussions About The Mineral Reserves In The Amazon. Thus, During Last Wednesday (03/02), President Jair Bolsonaro Stated That He Supports A Bill Allowing Potassium Mining In Areas Of The Region, Including In Indigenous Lands, Without Considering The Impacts Of These Activities.

Brazil Suffers From Fertilizer Deficit Due To Low Import Of The Product, Caused By Conflicts Between Ukraine And Russia
The Past Few Weeks Have Been Quite Tense For The Global Market Due To The Ongoing And Direct Conflicts Between Ukraine And Russia. Thus, Although The War Has Not Had Direct Influences On Brazilian Territory, The National Fertilizer Market Has Been Suffering From A Deficit In Product Imports. This Happens Because Most Of These Bulk Products That Reached Brazil Came From Russia, Which Now Maintains Its Exports Suspended Indefinitely.
As A Result, A Discussion About Potassium Mining For Use In Fertilizers In Brazil Has Started, And President Jair Bolsonaro Stated That “With The Russia/Ukraine War, We Now Risk The Lack Of Potassium Or An Increase In Its Price. Our Food Security And Agriculture (Economy) Require Measures From Us, The Executive And Legislative, That Allow Us Not To Be Externally Dependent On Something We Have In Abundance.” The President Remains Highly Supportive Of Measures To Release Mining Activities In Areas Not Previously Permitted, Such As Indigenous Lands In The Amazon.
Thus, The President Urges Parliamentarians To Approve A Bill That Allows Such Activities, Even With The Existence And Well-Being Of Indigenous Peoples At Stake In This Matter, Due To The Low Import Of The Product. Due To These Comments Made On His Twitter, The President Has Been Heavily Criticized By Both Environmental Groups And The Indigenous Peoples Living On These Lands Who Are Threatened By The Project The President Intends To Advance.
Despite The Great Abundance Of Potassium In The Amazon Territories, Mining Practices In The Region Could Bring Serious Problems For Indigenous Peoples
The Huge Potassium Reserve That The Amazon Has Is Undeniable, And The Potential For Potassium Production In The Amazon Basin Is Similar To That Of The Ural Region In Russia And Saskatchewan In Canada, According To A Geological Survey By The Brazilian Geological Service – CPRM. However, The Extraction And Mining Of This Substance Are Still Highly Discussed Issues In The National Context, As The Illegality Of These Activities Places The Lives Of Thousands Of Indigenous People Living Around This Region At Risk And They Are Being Threatened.
Moreover, This Is Not The First Time The President Has Been Supportive Of Mining In Indigenous Lands, As The Bill Supporting Illegal Mining And Artisanal Mining In The Amazon Was Backed By Him. With The President’s Comments, Mining Companies Represented By The Brazilian Mining Institute (Ibram) Want The Government To Create A Working Group Involving Potassium Of Brazil To Accelerate Its Potassium Project In Autazes, Amazonas.
Thus, The Existence Of These Indigenous Peoples Is Increasingly Threatened, And If The Global Scenario Continues At This Pace Of Conflicts, The Amazon Region May Suffer From Potassium Mining Activities In The Coming Months For Fertilizer Production, As Well As Illegal Mining.
