A Brazilian Company Was Born From a Debt and Became a Global Leader With Billion-Dollar Revenue and Presence in 50 Countries
Bauducco is now the largest panettone manufacturer in the world, known as the Baron of Panettones with over 70% of the Brazilian market and exports to dozens of countries. But what few people know is that everything started almost by chance when the Italian Carlo Bauducco landed in Brazil in the 1950s, not speaking Portuguese to collect a debt.
What was supposed to be a quick trip turned into a life-changing experience. Enchanted by São Paulo and noticing the absence of panettones on the shelves, Carlo decided to open a pastry shop to cater to the Italian community. The family business grew rapidly, faced fires, crises, and even problems with local flour, until it transformed into a true food empire.
Who Is the Baron of Panettones?
The title of “Baron of Panettones” can be credited to the patriarch Carlo Bauducco, born in Moncalieri, Italy, and founder of the company.

In 1950, after suffering a debt from a sale of baking machines, he came to Brazil to try to recover part of the loss.
It was during Christmas that year that he had a revelation: there were no panettones for sale in São Paulo.
Instead of returning to Italy, Carlo brought his family, set up a bakery, and called a countryman to develop the recipe.
The original dough created at that time with natural fermentation is still maintained today in the so-called “fermentation room” and is fed daily.
How Much Revenue Does Bauducco Generate Currently?
Bauducco’s growth was exponential. After decades of innovation, the company reached an estimated revenue of R$ 5 billion in 2022, according to market data.
It exports its products to more than 50 countries and has a factory in the United States, in Miami, opened in 2018.
Besides the traditional panettone, the brand diversified its portfolio with chocotones, cookies, toasts, cakes, filled bars, and seasonal products.
The acquisition of competitor Visconti in 2001 consolidated the company’s leadership in the Brazilian market, with about 7 out of 10 panettones sold being Bauducco.
Where Are Bauducco’s Stores Located?
The company also bet on physical retail. Casa Bauducco, launched as a pilot project in 2012, currently has more than 130 stores in Brazil.
The expectation is to reach 500 units in the next five years.
Inspired by global brand concepts like Apple and Coca-Cola, Bauducco uses the stores as a way to reinforce identity, increase perceived value, and offer immersive experiences to consumers.
It’s possible to consume the products in own cafes and watch the preparation of exclusive recipes.
Why Is Bauducco Considered a Symbol of Brazil?
Bauducco is not just a food company: it has become a symbol of national identity and Italian heritage in Brazil.
Its TV commercials, iconic packaging, and year-end campaigns are part of the emotional memory of millions of Brazilians.
Even after Carlo’s death in 1978, the company remained under family control, with subsequent generations maintaining the legacy of innovation and tradition.
The current CEO, André Felice, is from the third generation and leads the global expansion of the brand.
