The Questioning of President Jair Bolsonaro Reveals Concern That the Act May Have Been Criminal to Jeopardize the Auction Taking Place in November

On the morning of this Friday (10/18), President Jair Bolsonaro commented again on the case of the crude oil spill on the Northeast beaches.
This time, Bolsonaro questioned whether the oil spill affecting the Northeast since September was a deliberately practiced action aimed at affecting interest in the blocks to be offered by ANP during the mega auction of the Cessão Onerosa taking place on November 6.

In a live broadcast on Facebook alongside Defense Minister General Fernando Azevedo e Silva and Navy officials, Bolsonaro stated: “Coincidence or not, we have a concession auction. I wonder, we need to be very responsible in what we say: could it be a criminal act to harm this auction? It’s a question that is in the air.”

“We are aware of our responsibility, the Armed Forces and other government bodies are doing their part,” the president added.

In the video, Bolsonaro reiterated that the oil found on the beaches is of Venezuelan origin, a fact that has already been confirmed by analyses from IBAMA, but does not mean that the neighboring country is responsible for the environmental disaster.

Admiral Leonardo Puntel, commander of naval operations in the Navy, stated that the oil “very likely” came from a ship and that the stain first reached Paraíba and moved up to Maranhão, affecting other states along the way.

Investigation

According to a survey by the Navy, 140 oil tankers navigated the region on the estimated date of the oil spill, but the defense minister stated in the video that the case is an environmental crime.
“Probably it is an environmental crime, because the ship did not notify. The Navy, along with other bodies, is verifying this possibility,” he declared.

Bolsonaro also reiterated in the video that the oil, which reached the Northeast beaches for the first time in early September, would be of Venezuelan origin. On Thursday, Ibama confirmed that the oil is Venezuelan, but emphasized that this does not necessarily mean that Venezuela is responsible for the spill. The Venezuelan government denied responsibility in the case.

It is worth noting that the auction referred to by Bolsonaro will be the largest round of oil bidding in history, where the union intends to raise a total of 106.5 billion reais in signing bonuses for the excess oil from the so-called Cessão Onerosa.
The amount raised has been the subject of intense discussions about the sharing to be made among states and municipalities.
