Rio Grande do Norte Takes an Important Step in the Renewable Energy Sector by Inaugurating Brazil’s First Cement Factory That Uses Green Hydrogen.

Rio Grande do Norte stands out as the first state in Brazil to adopt green hydrogen as a fuel in cement production, replacing traditional petroleum derivatives. This pioneering initiative is the result of a strategic partnership between the State Government, CPFL Energy (part of the Chinese State Grid Group), and Mizu Cimentos. The modern cement factory, located in Baraúna, 317 km from Natal, marks an important advance in the Brazilian industry by combining technological innovation with sustainability, strengthening the state’s commitment to the transition to cleaner and renewable energy sources.

With this action, Rio Grande do Norte consolidates its position as a leader in the green revolution in the country’s industrial sector.

Understand the Contract at the Cement Factory with Green Hydrogen

The contract for the production and consumption of green hydrogen was signed on August 22, 2024, in the auditorium of the Government Palace in Natal, by Governor Fátima Bezerra, the CEO of CPFL Energy, Gustavo Estrela, and the CEO of Mizu (a company of the Polimix group), Roberto de Oliveira. Also signing were the Secretary of State for Economic Development of RN, Silvio Torquato, and Deputy Secretary, Hugo Fonseca.

According to the governor, the company is writing a new chapter in its history. With the new cement factory using green hydrogen, the company is providing a clear example that the industrialization of the Northeast and the reindustrialization of Brazil are possible.

This contract is a firm step towards the future and strengthens strategic sectors of the economy. Furthermore, it reinforces RN as a reference in renewable energies and processes for decarbonization of the world.

The head of the RN Executive also emphasized the synergy between the public and private sectors, stating that a partnership has been consolidated, the result of a memorandum of intentions signed last year, which encourages development with sustainability, with dialogue alongside the communities.

Cement Factory with Green Hydrogen Will Use 250 Tons of Fuel

In Baraúna, Mizu employs 370 people and generates 1,500 indirect jobs. CPFL Energy is the third largest energy producer in the state and has installed a water supply system with a desalination plant that serves 3,000 people in the Amarelão community in João Câmara. The green hydrogen production unit to supply Mizu’s factory will have a capacity of 1 MW and will provide 250 tons of fuel per year.

According to Gustavo Estrella, the cement industry was identified as essential, and, with the support of the State Government, it was decided to invest R$ 43 million in a hydrogen plant.

Bruno Monte, the Director of Strategy and Innovation at CPFL, considered the contract a significant advance toward energy transition. CPFL was also represented by the chairman of the board, Daobiao Chen. The pilot plant is expected to be operational by 2027.

Mizu Has a Giant Structure in RN

For Hugo Fonseca, Deputy Secretary of Economic Development of RN, the contract strengthens commercial ties and mutual cooperation. It is an example of how the public and private sectors can promote development and economic growth.

Given its potential, RN has the conditions to lead the production of green hydrogen, being a reference for Brazil. There is certainty that the right path is being forged for sustainable economic and social development.

Roberto de Oliveira, CEO of Mizu, informed that the company’s structure in RN consists of five concrete production units, a 100 MW wind farm, and the cement factory with green hydrogen in Baraúna. The Consul General of China, based in Recife, Lan Heping, reminded that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Brazil and China and congratulated the Government of RN for formalizing the contract.
