Rates, Theft, Taxes, and Inefficiencies Are the Villains for Brazil to Have One of the Most Expensive Electricity Bills in the World!

In the last five years, the cost of electricity in Brazil has increased by 47%. This significant increase contributed to the country rising in the global ranking, and currently, Brazil is the 2nd country with the most expensive electricity cost in the world, second only to Colombia.

This is revealed by a study published by Abrace (Association of Large Industrial Consumers of Energy and Free Consumers) about the cost of energy in the country.

After Colombia and Brazil, Turkey, Chile, and Portugal respectively follow at the top of the ranking among the countries that charge the most for energy.

The study indicates that out of the total cost paid by consumers, only 53.5% is effectively used for the generation, transmission, and distribution of energy.

The villains for Brazilians’ high electricity bills are in the other 46.5% remaining, which are composed of rates, theft, taxes, and inefficiencies.

Regarding energy theft alone, it is estimated that in 2022 the losses will total more than R$5.4 billion.
