Trade And Political Dispute Between Brazil And The United States Takes Unprecedented Forms, With 50% Tariff On Brazilian Products, Sanctions On Authorities And Lula’s Articulation With Brics Leaders To Confront The Diplomatic Crisis.

The British newspaper Financial Times described this Tuesday, August 12, 2025, an “unprecedented dispute” between Brazil and the United States following President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports.

According to the report, the conflict is likely to prolong and may intensify as the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva seeks coordination with Brics partners.

US Tariff And Diplomatic Escalation

The tariff measure came into effect on Wednesday, August 6, and affects most products of Brazilian origin, with exceptions listed by the US government.

The FT text reports that instead of seeking the author of the tariffs, Lula spoke with leaders of the Brics, such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin, in search of political and economic support.

The newspaper’s assessment is that the Brazilian response reinforces the atypical nature of the confrontation with Washington and decreases the chances of a quick solution.

What Is Exempt From The Tariff And What Is Affected

Despite the hefty tariff, the White House published an annex with about 700 exceptions, preserving strategic segments.

Among the spared items, the FT and sector analyses cite civil aircraft and part of the agribusiness agenda, such as orange juice and pulp.

At the same time, relevant chains, such as coffee and meats, have been pointed out by business entities as impacted by the new 50% level.

The final design of the exceptions, according to experts, reduces some of the immediate shock but maintains pressure on exporters.

Pressures On The Supreme Court And Sanctions On Moraes

In the background of the dispute are criticisms from the US government about the actions of the Supreme Federal Court and, in particular, of Minister Alexandre de Moraes in cases involving misinformation and attacks on institutions.

According to the FT, Washington demanded the reversal of court orders that affected US-based digital platforms, alleging “secret and illegal censorship orders”.

On July 30, the Treasury Department sanctioned Moraes under the Magnitsky Act, after the State Department revoked visas for the minister, allies on the Supreme Court and family members.

The measures widened the strain between the countries.

Bolsonaro Case Enters Washington’s Radar

The FT report maintains that Trump “personally identified” with the situation of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is facing charges related to the attempt to overturn the 2022 election results.

The US government has classified the trial as “witch hunt” and used the case to justify part of the restrictions.

Sources cited by the newspaper point out that the Planalto’s stance of not interfering in judicial matters has reduced the margin for direct negotiation between the governments.

Foreign Trade And Surplus Numbers

Another point highlighted by the FT is the divergence over the bilateral balance. While Trump speaks of “unsustainable deficits”, official data shows that the United States Had A Surplus In Goods Trade With Brazil Last Year.

Data from the US government indicate a positive balance close to US$ 7.4 billion in 2024, contradicting the discourse of the US Executive and serving as a argument for Brasília in international forums.

Lula’s Strategy With The Brics

Without signs of immediate retreat in Washington, the Brazilian government intensified talks with Brics countries to assess coordinated responses and mitigate impacts.

The FT reports that Lula sought Modi and Putin in sequence and reinforced dialogue with other partners in the group.

The Planalto’s guidance has been to emphasize the autonomy of the Brazilian Judiciary while also opening technical channels to map the effects of the tariff by sector, without rushing into retaliations that may raise costs for consumers and businesses.

Possible Developments

The British newspaper notes that Trump tends to change positions quickly, which does not eliminate the chance of an agreement.

Still, it considers a “difficult” solution in the short term, given the political component of the impasse.

Brazil is trying to separate the judicial dispute from trade discussions, but the combination of tariffs, sanctions, and public pressure in both countries creates a volatile environment.

Interlocutors from both sides evaluate that, without a narrative truce, any technical gesture runs into domestic political costs.

Polarization In Brazil And Electoral Calendar

In the FT’s diagnosis, the clash arrives in a sensitive phase of Brazilian politics.

The population remains highly polarized and Lula’s name appears as a potential candidate in October 2026, when the country returns to the polls for the presidency.

The picture tends to keep the topic in campaigns, while productive sectors push for regulatory predictability and reduction of uncertainties.

What Are The Next Steps

In the short term, exporters are monitoring transitional rules and lists of exceptions to reprogram shipments.

In parallel, diplomats are seeking technical dialogue to reduce damage in sensitive areas such as agriculture, energy, and aviation.

The Brazilian priority, according to aides, is to avoid a spiral of retaliations that would raise input costs, pressure inflation, and compromise investments, while at the same time maintaining the independence of institutions.

In the face of a dispute that mixes trade, politics, and justice, what should be Brazil’s strategy: intensify articulation with the Brics, insist on a direct negotiation with Washington, or pursue both fronts in parallel?
