Money Stopped in Mercado Pago Earns Every Day, Above Savings, and with a Chance to Beat the CDI: Will It Be the End of Traditional Banks?
Mercado Pago has ceased to be merely the “financial arm” of Mercado Livre and has transformed into one of the main payment systems in Brazil. Today, millions of Brazilians use the platform not only to buy and sell but also as a complete digital account, which earns more than savings, offers physical and virtual cards, credit for consumption, and even options in cryptocurrencies.
Free Digital Account and Automatic Earnings
Opening an account in Mercado Pago is simple and completely free. The customer does not pay a maintenance fee and, unlike traditional banks, the account balance starts earning automatically, at least 100% of the CDI — an index higher than the earnings from savings. Under specific conditions, such as using the Piggy Bank or participating in the Meli+ program, this yield can reach up to 112% of the CDI. This means that the money left idle already generates daily returns above savings, and in many cases, even higher than the CDI itself, without the need for investments in separate funds or investments.
The digital account also offers basic daily functions, such as free and unlimited Pix transfers, bill payments, mobile recharges, and even the possibility of salary portability. Another advantage is that funds can be transferred immediately to any bank at no additional cost.

Physical and Virtual Cards: Online Purchases and Withdrawals
The system offers two types of cards:
- Physical Card, which works for debit and credit (when approved) and can be used in physical stores or for withdrawals at ATMs;
- Virtual Card, which can be generated by the app in seconds, ideal for secure online purchases since the data can be updated whenever the user prefers.
This model eliminates the need to expose personal information in digital purchases and provides greater control over spending.
Point Machines: In-Person Sales Without Bureaucracy
For entrepreneurs, freelancers, and small retailers, Mercado Pago offers the Point machines, in different versions — such as Point Mini, Point Pro 2, and Point Smart. They do not require a bank affiliation, have their own connection via chip, and deliver sales amounts directly to the Mercado Pago account.
The retailer can choose whether they want to receive the money immediately, in 14 days, or in 30 days, with different fees for each option. Additionally, the system allows passing on the cost of installment payments to the consumer or absorbing the interest to attract more sales.
Online Solutions: QR Code, Payment Link, and Checkout
The Mercado Pago ecosystem goes beyond physical machines. It is possible to create payment links and share them via WhatsApp or social media, generate QR Codes for quick sales at points of service, and integrate the checkout into e-commerce websites.
This flexibility has allowed the system to gain traction among small merchants and self-employed professionals who do not have a physical store but need to receive payments in a practical and secure manner.
Credit and Installments Without a Card
Another differentiator of Mercado Pago is Mercado Crédito, a financing line that allows purchases to be paid in up to 12 installments without requiring a credit card. This feature is available both on Mercado Livre and partner websites, and can also be used to pay bills, recharges, or purchases via QR Code.
There is also the option of personal loans, which are released according to the user’s financial history on the platform. Payments can be made in fixed installments, deducted directly from the account balance.
Cryptocurrencies and Meli Dollar Stablecoin
Brazil is one of the countries where Mercado Pago already allows buying, selling, and storing cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum directly through the app. The big news, however, is the Meli Dollar, a stablecoin launched in 2024 and backed by the US dollar at a 1:1 ratio.
It functions as a stable currency that can be used for transactions within the platform, protecting the user from the volatility of the crypto market. This innovation positions Mercado Pago as one of the first fintechs in Latin America to integrate cryptocurrencies and stablecoins within a single ecosystem.
Pix as a Strategic Ally
The Pix, the instant payment system from the Central Bank, is a key element within Mercado Pago. In addition to free transfers in Brazil, since February 2025, the fintech has started offering Pix in Argentina, allowing Brazilian tourists to pay in reais automatically, without relying on currency exchange.
This international integration demonstrates the company’s effort to expand its reach and offer solutions that eliminate border barriers for consumers and merchants.
Why Mercado Pago Wins Over Brazilians
The success of Mercado Pago in Brazil can be explained by three factors:
- Simplicity — account opened in minutes, without banking bureaucracy;
- Cost-Effectiveness — free services, earnings above savings, and unlimited Pix;
- Diversification — cards, machines, credit, cryptocurrencies, and stablecoins in one platform.
Mercado Pago has established itself as one of the main financial tools in Brazil, offering practicality for both buyers and sellers. Whether to manage everyday money, make digital payments, accept cards in in-person sales, or even invest in cryptocurrencies, the platform positions itself as a complete solution for the modern consumer.
In a scenario where Brazilians seek more autonomy and less bureaucracy, Mercado Pago strengthens its position as a competitive and innovative alternative.
