A Watershed Moment for the Wind Sector in Brazil, the Congress Points to a Promising Future in Sustainable Energy Generation.
Impressive Numbers:
About 6,500 participants, more than 160 speakers, and nearly 50 hours of discussions. Held at the São Paulo Expo, the 14th Brazil Windpower (BWP) not only highlighted the growing strength of wind energy in Brazil but also outlined strategies to establish Brazil as a global leader in renewable energy.
Considered the most relevant wind energy congress in Latin America, BWP brought together key figures: senior executives, lawmakers, representatives from sector organizations, entrepreneurs, and technology manufacturers, both local and international. The final message? Brazil is ready and eager for investments to establish itself as a global reference in wind energy.
The Growing Brazilian Protagonism:
According to Elbia Gannoum, president of ABEEólica, “Brazil has proactively begun its journey in wind energy and demonstrated its potential to attract capital. Leading global companies have Brazil in their sights for investments.” In numbers, the country installed more than 4 gigawatts (GW) of wind energy in the last year, ranking third globally, behind only China and the USA.

A study reveals the expansion of renewable energy procurement in Brazil and shows how companies are taking advantage of opportunities to reduce expenses, ensure energy efficiency, and strengthen strategic environmental commitments.
The Potential of Offshore Wind:
The study “Offshore Wind Roadmap 2035” indicated a potential of 700 GW for offshore wind in Brazil, equivalent to fifty plants the size of the Itaipu hydroelectric plant. However, to realize this potential, participants at BWP emphasized the need for the approval of bill 576/2021, which aims to regulate the sector. With approval, Brazil can solidify its position in the global wind industry.
Hermano Pinto Junior from Informa Markets highlights: “BWP revealed Brazil’s immense potential in the energy transition. A robust regulatory framework will be the catalyst to propel the sector.”
Innovation and Sustainability in Focus:
The 2023 theme of Brazil Windpower was the just energy transition and Brazil’s centrality in this process. Panels discussed technological innovations, such as green hydrogen, and the need for diversification of Brazil’s energy matrix. Social aspects, such as local community acceptance of wind farms, were also addressed.
Jean Paul Prates, president of Petrobras, announced at the event that the company will become the largest developer of wind projects in Brazil. He also detailed the partnership with WEG to create an innovative onshore wind turbine in the country.
Ben Backwell, CEO of GWEC, states: “BWP 2023 will be seen as a turning point in offshore wind energy in Brazil, signaling the transition from aspiration to real action.”
