A watershed moment for the wind sector in Brazil, the congress points to a promising future in sustainable energy generation.
Impressive numbers:
Around 6.500 participants, more than 160 speakers and almost 50 hours of discussions. Held at the São Paulo Expo, the 14th Brazil Windpower (BWP) not only highlighted the growing strength of wind energy in Brazil, but also outlined the strategies to consolidate Brazil as a world leader in renewable energy.
Considered the most relevant wind energy congress in Latin America, the BWP brought together important figures: senior executives, legislators, representatives of sector organizations, entrepreneurs and wind technology manufacturers, both local and international. The final message? Brazil is prepared and eager for investments to establish itself as a global reference in wind energy.
Brazil’s growing protagonism:
According to Elbia Gannoum, president of ABEEolic, “Brazil began its wind energy journey proactively and demonstrated its potential to attract capital. The main global companies have Brazil in their investment sights.” In numbers, the country installed more than 4 gigawatts (GW) of wind energy last year, ranking third globally, behind only China and the USA.
- New government law threatens renewable energy sector in Brazil, potentially affecting 1,8 THOUSAND jobs and causing losses of R$200 MILLION per year
- The end of solar panels? With the price of a cell phone, a new residential wind turbine generates 150 kWh of energy for your home, rain or shine, has a useful life of 20 years and promises to revolutionize energy generation in the world
- Giant batteries revolutionize solar and wind energy, promising unprecedented efficiency and making electricity bills cheaper: the future of energy is closer than you think!
- First 3-meter residential wind turbine, developed with artificial intelligence, is presented as a revolutionary solution to transform the future of renewable energy!
The potential of offshore wind farms:
The study “Roadmap Offshore Wind Power 2035” pointed to a potential of 700 GW for offshore wind power in Brazil, the equivalent of fifty plants the size of the Itaipu hydroelectric plant. However, to realize this potential, participants in the BWP emphasized the need to approve bill 576/2021, which aims to regulate the sector. With approval, Brazil can solidify its position in the global wind industry.
Hermano Pinto Junior, from Informa Markets, highlights: “The BWP revealed Brazil's immense potential in the energy transition. A robust regulatory framework will be the catalyst to catapult the sector.”
Innovation and Sustainability in focus:
The 2023 theme of Brazil Windpower it was the fair energy transition and Brazil’s centrality in this process. Panels discussed technological innovations, such as green hydrogen, and the need to diversify the Brazilian energy matrix. Social aspects, such as local communities' acceptance of wind farms, were also addressed.
Jean Paul Prates, president of Petrobras, announced at the event that the company will become the largest developer of wind projects in Brazil. He also detailed the partnership with WEG to create an innovative onshore wind turbine in the country.
Ben Backwell, CEO of GWEC, states: “BWP 2023 will be seen as an inflection point in offshore wind energy in Brazil, signaling the transition from aspiration to real action.”
