The Partnership Between BRK and Serena Represents an Important Milestone for the Basic Sanitation Sector and for the Use of Renewable Energy in Brazil.
BRK, one of the largest Brazilian sanitation companies, announced the expansion of its partnership with Serena, a global reference in the supply of renewable energy. The new agreement provides for the supply of clean energy from the Assuruá 5 wind farm, located in Xique-Xique, Bahia, with a projected start in the first quarter of 2025 and a duration of 15 years.
Successful Partnership in the Free Energy Market
The initiative reinforces BRK’s commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency, while consolidating Serena’s expertise in providing innovative solutions in the renewable energy market.
With this expansion, the company estimates it will avoid the emission of 64 thousand tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂), aligning its operations with the GHG Protocol (Greenhouse Gases) through I-REC renewable energy certificates.

A study reveals the expansion of renewable energy procurement in Brazil and shows how companies are taking advantage of opportunities to reduce expenses, ensure energy efficiency, and strengthen strategic environmental commitments.
Since the beginning of the collaboration between BRK and Serena in 2020, the two companies have been working to transform the sanitation sector with a focus on energy efficiency and positive environmental impact.
The new contract includes the supply of energy generated by the Assuruá 5 wind farm, one of Serena’s largest assets, with an installed capacity of 243.6 MW, enough to power millions of homes.
According to Fabiana Pasquot Polido, Global Director of Structured Operations at Serena, the expansion of the partnership represents a significant advancement for energy transition.
“Serena is committed to providing competitive and sustainable solutions for our clients. Strengthening our collaboration with BRK is an important step toward accelerating a cleaner and more efficient business model, positively impacting the population,” says Fabiana.
Carlos Henrique Thompson, Commercial Director of BRK, highlights the importance of the ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) agenda as a strategic pillar of the company.
“This partnership with Serena is essential for us to advance in the use of renewable energy sources. By making our operations more efficient, we contribute significantly to the environment and reaffirm our commitment to sustainability,” emphasizes Thompson.
Positive Environmental Impact and Sustainability Goals
With the expansion of the agreement, BRK is getting closer to its sustainability targets and carbon footprint reduction.
The renewable energy supplied by Serena will directly contribute to neutralizing CO₂ emissions related to Scope 2 of the GHG Protocol, which accounts for the indirect emissions of greenhouse gases from electricity consumption.
In addition to ensuring more efficient operations, the initiative highlights BRK’s concern with sustainable development, positively impacting areas such as public health and education, directly related to basic sanitation.
