The Tatra trucks are manufactured by one of the oldest and most innovative automotive brands in the world. Founded in the 19th century by Ignatz Schustala, a Czech-German entrepreneur, Tatra started with carriages and wagons before venturing into railway vehicles and automobiles. This is how the first heavy trucks were born in Brazil!
From the beginning, Tatra innovated with the T11, a compact equipped with an air-cooled two-cylinder boxer engine and a chassis that became known as the “backbone”. This innovative design served as the basis for virtually all future products of the company, including the first Tatra T23 and T24 trucks launched in 1926.
Tatra Developed The T81 Model
During World War II, Tatra developed the T81 model, a heavy truck with 6×4 drive and a 12.5-liter V8 diesel engine, which soon became essential for German military operations. Later, the T111, launched in 1942, proved to be a vital vehicle during and after the war, with its 6×4 or 6×6 drive and a load capacity of 22 tons.

The T111 was built to face extreme conditions, from Europe’s harsh winters to the arid deserts of North Africa. Its air-cooled V12 engine eliminated cooling and freezing issues common in other vehicles, making it extremely reliable and robust.
After the war, Tatra continued to innovate with models such as the T138 in 1959 and the T813 in 1967. The latter was famous for its versatility and off-road capability, available with 4×4, 6×6, and 8×8 drive, standing out in both civil and military use.
Tatra Trucks In Brazil
With the Velvet Revolution in 1989 and the subsequent split of Czechoslovakia in 1992, Tatra maintained its truck production, discontinuing car manufacturing in the 1990s. In 2011, Tatra formed a partnership with the American Group Paccar, bringing new opportunities and markets.
In 2023, Tatra Bras, a Brazilian group, began importing military trucks from Tatra to Latin America. The expectation is that these heavy trucks in Brazil will soon be available for the civil market as well. With their robustness and advanced technology, will they conquer our roads?
