A truck driver found a boleto for R$ 2,650 lost on the street, identified that the due date would be the next day and decided to pay the bill with his own resources, surprising the owner of the document when later located by the bank and social media.

Have you ever imagined losing a boleto, seeing money disappear along the way and still finding out later that the bill was paid without you having done anything for it? That was exactly the improbable situation that began to form when a truck driver came across something unexpected during his routine.

A woman from Alfenas, Southern Minas Gerais, lost a boleto of R$ 2,650 and only found out that the bill had been paid when she consulted the bank. All of this was only possible because a truck driver found the boleto and the money in the same envelope, checked the due date for the next day and decided to pay it all without thinking twice.

The report displayed by Balanço Geral from Rede Mais, an affiliate of Record, presented the complete story of the truck driver.

Truck Driver Reports How He Found Money and Boleto

The driver Maicon Carrijo said he works in deliveries in the industrial sector of Alfenas when he stopped the truck at the curb to check the tire and noticed a paper rolled up with money and a boleto worth R$ 2,650.

He said he stored the money in the truck and, upon arriving at the company, saw that the document was due the next day, decided to use the balance from his own account to pay the boleto and kept the cash he found at that moment.

The woman was able to locate the payer after being informed by the bank about the name linked to the transaction and used Facebook to get in touch, reporting that she had lost the amount after selling a motorcycle to pay off installments of the house.

The truck driver stated that the woman’s husband later approached him in person to thank him for his initiative and said that the couple was surprised to confirm that the payment had been made by someone unknown.

Motivation Built on Personal Experiences

The driver reported that his decision to act this way comes from family teachings and mentioned that he underwent treatment for cancer in 2017, when he was hospitalized undergoing chemotherapy and radiation and reassessed various perceptions of life.

According to him, this experience reinforced the idea of maintaining honest attitudes with other people and himself, something that he tries to convey to his two daughters and wife in everyday life, even in the face of personal difficulties.

He stated that he feels grateful when he can perform actions that he considers correct and emphasized that he believes life requires integrity, mentioning that small gestures can influence other people to act similarly.

The show’s production tried to contact the woman to register the complete version about the loss of the boleto, the visit to the bank and the surprise upon learning that the bill had already been paid, but as of now, they have not been able to receive a response.

The truck driver said he was pleased with the meeting with the couple and stated that the search through social media showed that the woman really wanted to understand what had happened, as she did not imagine that someone would pay the document.

The broadcaster informed that if she wishes to participate and thank the driver live, she can contact the production to detail the episode, which mobilized residents of the region and generated repercussions for the rare attitude recorded in Alfenas.

In the records of the case, the driver mentioned that he only noticed the money because the paper was a bit loose near the tire, a detail that reinforced the impression that the material had fallen from someone passing by.

What The Legislation Provides For Finding Lost Money

Brazilian legislation establishes specific rules for situations where someone finds money belonging to another person, because accidental possession does not transfer ownership and does not authorize private use.

The Civil Code states that any found property must be returned to the owner or immediately delivered to the competent authority, thus creating a clear procedure that protects the rights of the person who lost the item and prevents the discovery from becoming an undue advantage.

Additionally, the rule considers that the finder assumes legal responsibility from the moment he becomes aware of the property and recognizes that it does not belong to him, requiring concrete actions to attempt to locate the owner.

The Line Between Finding and Crime According to The Penal Code

The Penal Code addresses the issue as the appropriation of found property when a person fails to return money or the object even if able to identify the owner or present the material to the police.

The crime does not require prior intent, as it is configured at the moment the individual, upon noticing the loss, decides to keep the found amount. Therefore, deliberate omission corresponds to a legal violation.

The penalty includes detention and fines, reinforcing that the simple opportunity to keep the money does not exempt the finder from fulfilling their obligations. In many cases, small amounts are also covered, since the law makes no distinction between high or low values.

Correct Procedures and Consequences for Those Who Ignore The Law

The legal recommendation is to file a report or deliver the amount to the nearest police authority, as well as provide information on where the money was found and other details that may help the true owner recover the property.

Furthermore, legal experts state that transparent actions serve as proof of good faith and dispel suspicions of undue appropriation.

Those who do not follow these guidelines may face criminal and civil liability, including the obligation to return the amount. Thus, appropriate conduct protects both the owner and the finder of the money, preventing conflicts and ensuring compliance with the legislation.
