Explosion Of A Fuel Truck Caused A Massive Fire And Closed A Stretch Of The Highway For Hours
An explosion of a fuel truck startled drivers and halted traffic on BR-101 in Palhoça, in Greater Florianópolis. Early in the afternoon on Sunday (6), a truck loaded with ethyl alcohol overturned and caught fire. The accident occurred at km 233, in the stretch known as Morro dos Cavalos.
Fire Spread And Affected Other Vehicles
According to the Federal Highway Police (PRF), the truck was heading south towards Porto Alegre when it overturned and exploded.
The fire spread rapidly, affecting other vehicles that were stopped on the road. Drivers honked and shouted as they attempted to escape the area. The dark smoke could be seen from afar.

The fire affected both directions of the highway. The lane was completely blocked. The PRF reported that there was no easy detour for those heading north.
The recommendation was to use alternative routes such as SC-435 through São Bonifácio or SC-281 through Anitápolis — both with complicated stretches.
Victims And Assistance
Five people were injured. Among them were the truck driver and his wife, who were in the vehicle at the time of the explosion.
They suffered burns on their arms and legs and were taken to the UPA of Pinheira. Three other people who were in affected vehicles were also rescued. The assistance was provided by Arteris Litoral Sul and the Fire Department.
Number Of Vehicles Destroyed
The fire had a large reach. According to a report made by the firefighters and Arteris Litoral Sul, 24 cars and three trucks were affected by the flames. The explosion and intense fire left a trail of destruction on the road.
The highway was only cleared early on Monday (7) at 5:09 AM. The congestion reached 9 kilometers northbound and 10 kilometers southbound. The salvage and cleanup work mobilized several teams for hours.
Images circulating on social media show the moment of the explosion, with panic-stricken drivers trying to escape. The scenes capture honking, shouting, and a thick cloud of smoke over the highway.
