Chinese Company Launches A New Cheap Electric Car For Less Than R$ 50 Thousand. The Electric Vehicle Delivers A Range Of Up To 230 Km.
The vehicle manufacturer MG Motor, part of Saic Motor, based in China, has launched another model of a cheap electric car for the Indian market, the minicar called Comet EV. So far, this is the cheapest vehicle in its category available in the country. The company’s idea is to use the model to compete with rivals in the country, such as Tata Motors, in the third largest vehicle market in the world.
Affordable Electric Car Priced At R$ 50 Thousand Delivers 230 Km Range
The two-door cheap electric car can travel 230 km on a single charge, starting at US$ 9,800, which directly converts to R$ 49,000 at the current exchange rate. Thus, the Chinese EV costs less than the Tiago, a four-door electric car sold by Tata.
Although it is more expensive, at US$ 10,400, the equivalent (R$ 52,000), it can travel further on a single charge, between 250 and 315 km, according to the manufacturer. MG Motor launched the Comet EV as an ideal passenger car for the urban environment and congested roads of India.

Fiat launches the new 2027 Toro hybrid with 48V, 176 hp, an electric motor of 15.5 hp, a 0.85 kWh battery, up to 7% fuel savings, 8% fewer emissions, and possible exemption from IPVA.
According to Rajeev Chaba, head of the manufacturer, this is because the popular electric car is highly maneuverable in the urban area, during a virtual launch event. Chaba adds that the vehicle is for those seeking a smart solution to current urban mobility problems.
However, electric car sales account for less than 2% of total annual sales in India, with 3.9 million vehicles sold between 2022 and 2023. For now, Tata Motors dominates this market there. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government aims to increase this to 30% by the beginning of the decade.
Growth of Sales for the Chinese Manufacturer
The Comet, designed to carry up to four people, is MG’s second EV in the Indian market. There, the company also sells the ZS, its largest electric SUV. The Chinese manufacturer expects electric cars to account for 25% to 30% of its sales in India in 2023. Rival BYD also launched its first popular electric car in India last year, with a plan to dominate 40% of the country’s electric vehicle market by the beginning of the next decade.
The price of the Comet, however, seems expensive compared to other values of cheap electric cars due to its small size, according to Gaurav Vangaal from S&P Global Mobility. Cars are no longer just for transportation, as they have become part of a driver’s lifestyle. The expectation is that MG will find enough customers for its vehicle, but it may fall short of its production goals.
Other Popular Electric Car Models Coming To The Market
In Bolivia, the startup Quantum Motors has launched an even cheaper popular electric minicar than the Comet, costing less than 40,000. However, this one holds space for up to three people, with a maximum speed of 56 km/h and a range of 95 km on a single charge.
The model is the size of a golf cart and has space only for drivers in the front, while up to two passengers can fit in the back. The model takes between 6 to 8 hours to fully charge.
According to Daniel Darense, a retiree from Cochabamba, he bought the electric car in September 2019 when it was launched, and since then, he has already driven 9,600 km, a distance slightly greater than that between São Paulo and London in his minicar.
