From Abandoned Mansion to Venue for Luxurious Parties: British Couple Transforms 140-Year-Old Mansion into a Millionaire Property Full of Charm, History, and Modern Environments that Delight Guests and Celebrants in Northumberland, United Kingdom

What was once an old mansion in ruins has now become one of the trendiest party houses in Northumberland, United Kingdom. The transformation was led by the couple Joanne Shiels, 60, and Geoff Bell, 61, who initially sought only a cozy home.

However, the project grew far beyond the original idea. The couple realized the potential of the property and decided to convert it into an event space.

Today, the property is valued at around £1 million, equivalent to R$ 7.5 million.

Investment and Complete Restoration Made by the Couple

The residence, called Greystonedale Mansion, has 140 years of history. When acquired in 2022, it had been abandoned for three decades. The mansion had no windows, the roof was full of holes, and the structure suffered from age.

Joanne and Geoff paid £300,000 (R$ 2.2 million) for the property. After that, they invested an additional £220,000 (R$ 1.6 million) in a major renovation.

It was two years of reconstruction, with a complete roof replacement, installation of new bathrooms, and restoration of ornamental details.

We had to replace or renovate practically everything. We changed the roof, added sophisticated plaster, and added two new bathrooms. There was a lot of work to be done, but in the end, it was worth it,” said Joanne to The Mirror.

The idea was always to celebrate life, even while we were building. That’s what I wanted when we started. I wanted people to come in and feel they could have fun,” she concluded.

Luxury Details and Unusual Spaces

The five-bedroom, three-bathroom mansion gained a new identity. The kitchen was transformed into an atmosphere with a nightclub vibe, while a large game room occupies much of the ground floor.

According to Joanne, the goal was always to create a cheerful and welcoming space. “I wanted people to feel alive inside, to realize they could have fun,” she stated.

Abandoned Mansion: From Dream Home to Airbnb Success

After the renovation, the couple lived in the house for a year. This period was enough for them to realize that the property was too big for just two people. Thus, they decided to list it on Airbnb.

In no time, Greystonedale Mansion became the favorite place for parties and celebrations. Bachelorette parties, birthdays, and weddings began to be held there, attracting visitors from various regions.

The listing describes the property as “Greystonedale Mansion is a miniature manor house with an abundance of original features, including a unique ornate ceiling in the main living room, which has been carefully restored to its original beauty, along with the rest of the house. Expect a truly unique experience when staying here, the house is filled with antiques and recycled treasures.” Today, the space is synonymous with luxury, history, and fun all in one place.

In 1968, Italian engineer Giorgio Rosa decided to put into practice a dream that seemed impossible: to create an island in international waters and transform it into a nation free of bureaucracies.

His plan was simple, yet bold. He wanted to build a platform in the Adriatic Sea, beyond the territorial limit of Italy, and declare its independence.

The project began ten years earlier, in 1958, funded with his own resources. Despite facing resistance from maritime authorities in Italy, Giorgio persisted.

He believed he could prove that an ordinary man could found a country from scratch.

The structure was built with concrete and steel, on pillars firmly anchored to the seabed. When he finally finished the work, Giorgio proclaimed the site as a new nation: the Republic of Rose Island.

A Symbol of Freedom Amidst Counterculture

The initiative emerged during a turbulent moment in history. The world was still feeling the effects of World War II, while the 1960s brought winds of change.

Youth protested, women fought for rights, and counterculture spread.

In this context, the small island became a symbol of freedom. Young people began to visit frequently, attracted by the idea of living without rules.

The location turned into a kind of alternative refuge, complete with a bar, restaurant, souvenir shop, and even a small post office.

Letters and citizenship requests arrived from various parts of the world. For many, Giorgio was a visionary who had created a paradise free of rules. For the Italian government, however, he was a threat.

Storms, Resistance, and the Beginning of the End of the Island

On the first night he slept on the island, Giorgio faced a violent storm. The wind nearly threw him into the sea.

Anyone else would have given up, but he did not. He believed so strongly in his project that he drilled into the seabed with a probe to capture freshwater — and succeeded.

His courage was impressive, but also irritated the authorities. The increasing movement of visitors and the independence rhetoric began to disturb the Italian government, which began to monitor the platform.

Despite this, Giorgio remained steadfast. The original project envisioned five floors, but only half of the first was completed. Still, the island held out for 55 days after its inauguration.

The Explosion That Ended a Dream

In 1969, the Italian government decided to end the experiment. The Navy took control of the structure and began its destruction.

Contrary to what the movie inspired by the story shows, the Island of Roses was not blown up all at once.

Two rounds of explosives, applied on different days, were needed to cause significant damage to the structure.

Even so, the platform partially withstood — a testament to the engineer’s skill. The final collapse came with another storm, which sank what remained of the construction.

For months, parts of the island could still be seen on the surface of the Adriatic.

The final blow was cruel: in addition to losing the island, Giorgio Rosa had to pay for the military operation that destroyed it.

He slowly paid off the debt with his salary as a teacher, a profession he took up after the incident.

Island of Roses: From Destruction to Rebirth on Screen

Decades later, Rosa’s story inspired the movie “The Incredible Story of the Island of Roses”, released by Netflix.

Director Sydney Sibilia rebuilt the platform to life size — about 400 square meters — in a gigantic pool of trapped sea water on the island of Malta.

The filming faced difficulties similar to those of the engineer himself, reinforcing how ambitious his project had been.

Even with the tragic ending, the Island of Roses continued to evoke curiosity. Forty years later, divers found remnants of the platform on the seabed and brought fragments to the surface.

One of them, a simple brick, was given to Giorgio with a symbolic dedication: “A piece of a dream for a great dreamer.”

Giorgio Rosa passed away in 2017 at the age of 92. He died without his island, but with recognition for having transformed an improbable dream into one of the most extraordinary episodes of engineering and human freedom.
