Roque Quagliato, the “King of Cattle”, transformed unexplored lands of the Amazon into an impactful agribusiness empire, leaving a legacy of innovation and challenges.

With a bold and strategic vision, rancher Roque Quagliato, also known as the “King of Cattle”, became one of the leading names in Brazilian agribusiness.

He transformed isolated lands of the Amazon into one of the largest and most impactful agribusiness projects in the country.

His journey not only inspired generations of ranchers but also generated a legacy of pioneering, accelerated growth, and various controversies.

Behind the scenes of Brazilian agribusiness, few names carry the same weight as Roque Quagliato.

He is a living legend of beef cattle farming in Brazil.

His story is marked by an unwavering courage to explore the Amazon, a forward-looking vision, and a strong entrepreneurial spirit.

Over more than fifty years of work, Roque built an empire that, over time, has solidified as a reference in the national agribusiness sector.

The origin of the “King of Cattle” dates back to his childhood in São Paulo, where his family was involved in the sugar-alcohol sector, managing the São Luiz Mill in Ourinhos.

However, it was during the 1970s, at the height of the military government’s incentive policy for Amazon occupation, that Roque identified an opportunity that would change his life.

The move from the interior of São Paulo to Pará was not a simple decision, but as he often said, it was a unique chance to build something great from scratch.

The Arrival in Pará and the Foundation of Fazenda Rio Vermelho

In 1973, at the age of 33, Roque Quagliato arrived in Sapucaia, in southern Pará, a practically unexplored region.

According to the rancher himself, “there was no town, no road… there was nothing.”

With support from fiscal incentives from the Superintendency of Amazon Development (SUDAM), he founded Fazenda Rio Vermelho, which would become the largest and most iconic of his empire.

Fazenda Rio Vermelho was a pioneer in transforming the Amazon rainforest into productive pastures, following the motto that became eternalized at the entrance of the property: “Developing Pará on the hoof of the cattle”.

This motto reflects Roque’s vision that the occupation of the Amazon could be done in a planned and responsible manner, always seeking productive efficiency without neglecting the environment.

The Growth and Consolidation of the Empire

As the years went by, Roque Quagliato expanded his operations to other regions in southern Pará, establishing the Quagliato Group, which would become one of the largest agribusiness complexes in Brazil.

During the 2000s, the group already had about 150,000 head of cattle, spread across more than 85,000 hectares of land in the state.

Roque’s agribusiness empire did not stop growing.

In 2023, the Rio Vermelho Group was involved in one of the largest real estate negotiations in Brazilian agribusiness by acquiring an additional 27,000 hectares in the Xinguara region, bringing the total area controlled by the group to about 112,000 hectares.

Today, the Rio Vermelho Group is responsible for approximately 240,000 head of beef cattle, solidifying Roque Quagliato as Brazil’s largest individual cattle rancher.

Roque Quagliato: Pioneering and Innovations in Cattle Raising

Roque Quagliato’s journey is marked not only by the size of his empire but also by the innovations he brought to the agribusiness sector.

He was one of the first cattle ranchers to adopt the concept of sustainable production intensification.

His motto “Intensify Pasture to Preserve the Environment” reflects a philosophy that seeks to increase productivity without encroaching on newly deforested areas.

In his farms, practices such as rotational grazing management and strict control of animal stocking rates are common.

In addition, Quagliato established partnerships with technology companies to control invasive plants, ensuring a more efficient and sustainable production.

One of his greatest innovations was implementing integrated crop-livestock systems (ICLS), a technique that allows for the recovery of degraded areas and optimization of land use.

The focus on improving the herd’s quality is also a key point of Roque’s management.

Since the beginning of his activities in the Amazon, he invested in forming a high-breed Nelore herd, which became a model for other ranchers.

The pursuit of genetic excellence, combined with sustainable and efficient practices, helped establish the Rio Vermelho Group as a reference in the sector.

Management and Business Philosophy

In addition to productive efficiency, Roque Quagliato also stood out for the solid and professional management of his businesses.

With a keen eye on liquidity and equity, he built a resilient company capable of surviving even the toughest market conditions.

His ability to adapt to the challenges of the sector, combined with careful financial management, made the Rio Vermelho Group a multi-sector empire, with a presence not only in cattle farming but also in the sugar-alcohol sector, in states such as São Paulo, Paraná, and Goiás.

Roque Quagliato: Legacy and Recognition in Agribusiness

At 80 years old, Roque Quagliato continues to be a highly respected figure in Brazilian agribusiness.

His discreet profile does not prevent him from being constantly honored at fairs and events in the sector.

In 2023, upon completing 50 years of activities of Grupo Rio Vermelho, Roque was widely recognized as one of the greatest names in Brazilian cattle raising.

In addition to his contribution to the agribusiness sector, Quagliato also played an important role in political and regional initiatives.

He was one of the main supporters of the creation of the State of Carajás, a proposal to strengthen the political representation of producers in southern Pará.

Over the years, he maintained a constant dialogue with unions and entities in the sector, being cited by leaders as an example of success and pioneering.

The Future of Brazilian Agribusiness and the Inspiration Left by Roque Quagliato

Today, Roque Quagliato is seen not only as a successful businessman but also as an example of innovation and responsibility in agribusiness.

His story, marked by entrepreneurial spirit, pioneering, and a constant quest for efficiency, continues to inspire generations of ranchers.

Roque’s legacy goes beyond the lands he occupied and the wealth he helped generate.

His vision for the future and his commitment to sustainability leave an indelible mark on Brazilian agribusiness.
