The Bet On The End Of Smartphones. New Device Promises To Change The Way We Connect To The World, Replacing Screens With An Immersive Interface And Voice Commands, Gestures And Artificial Intelligence.

One of Meta’s biggest bets for the future of personal technology was presented to the world with the arrival of the Meta Quest 3S.

The new mixed reality glasses model was the highlight of a recent Meta Connect event, where CEO Mark Zuckerberg reiterated that smartphones could become obsolete in a few years.

According to him, in up to a decade, most people will stop using their phones as their main device.

Zuckerberg’s argument is straightforward: phones, while convenient, create a social barrier and limit the digital experience.

On the other hand, augmented and mixed reality glasses would allow users to stay connected to the physical environment while interacting with digital content, offering a more fluid, immersive and intuitive experience.

Meta Quest 3S: The Device That Can Change Everything

The Meta Quest 3S is a more accessible version of Meta’s headset line, focused on making the technology more popular.

The device comes with two storage options, 128 GB and 512 GB, and an initial price of US$ 299.

Its performance promises to deliver up to 90% of the functionalities of the previous model, the Quest 3, which costs almost twice as much.

Meta’s goal is to lower entry barriers for the mass adoption of so-called spatial computing.

Among the highlights of the new headset are the ability to make video calls, send messages, watch streaming content, and interact with games and digital environments in a way that overlays the real world.

Instead of relying on a mobile phone screen, the user will have in front of them a virtual interface visible directly in the glasses.

The company is also betting on voice commands, motion sensors and artificial intelligence to make navigation more natural.

Billion-Dollar Investments And Bets On The Future Of Zuckerberg’s Company

Meta has already invested over US$ 100 billion in developing devices aimed at virtual and augmented reality since 2014.

Even with financial losses in the Reality Labs division, responsible for the Quest line and Ray-Ban Stories smart glasses, Zuckerberg remains committed to the long-term segment.

The executive argues that glasses will be the natural successors to smartphones, just as phones replaced computers for various daily tasks.

Augmented Reality Gains Ground In The Global Market

The global augmented and virtual reality market also reinforces this view.

The expectation is that devices of this type will generate around US$ 100 billion by the end of the decade.

The sector has grown rapidly in recent years, driven by advances in artificial intelligence and interest from companies like Apple, Google, Microsoft, Huawei, and Meta itself.

Although adoption is still limited to specific audiences, the growth of 5G infrastructure and the drop in device prices are expected to accelerate this transition.

Smartphones Still Dominate Brazil

However, despite Meta’s optimism, smartphones continue to expand, especially in emerging markets.

In Brazil, for example, smartphone sales grew in the first quarter of 2025, driven by the launch of new models from Chinese brands like Xiaomi and Honor.

This last one has just officially entered the country with a diverse line of devices, including foldables, mid-range, and high-end with embedded artificial intelligence.

While Meta’s glasses still have no launch forecast in the Brazilian market, the country remains among the largest consumers of smartphones in the world.

This raises questions about the actual pace of this possible replacement.

For many experts, the transition will be gradual, with both devices coexisting for many years.

Glasses are expected to start as complementary accessories, especially in niches such as entertainment, productivity, and business communication.

Experimental Technologies And Adoption Challenges

Meta, however, bets on rapid popularization.

In addition to the Meta Quest 3S, the company is already working on new models of glasses with integrated artificial intelligence and holography.

Internal projects, such as Orion, involve technologies capable of generating volumetric images in the user’s field of vision and responding to mental commands using neural sensors.

Still in the experimental phase, these devices indicate the path Meta intends to follow to consolidate its leadership in the next generation of digital interfaces.

User experience is one of the main current challenges.

Issues such as device weight, battery life, and comfort during prolonged use still limit the widespread adoption of smart glasses.

Even so, companies in the sector continue to invest in incremental improvements, with constant updates and the launch of new accessories focused on ergonomics and compatibility with popular apps.

Will The Digital Future Be Without Cellphones?

For Zuckerberg, the future will not be dominated by screens in hand, but by interfaces that integrate into everyday life in a discreet and intelligent way.

According to him, cellphones no longer keep up with the speed of technological changes and represent a form of distraction that disconnects people from their surroundings.

Glasses, on the other hand, would offer a more present and collaborative experience.

The Meta Quest 3S arrives with the promise of inaugurating a new stage in personal computing, but still needs to overcome the challenge of social and cultural acceptance.

Amid the rise of artificial intelligence, the digitization of services, and the growth of global connectivity, are users ready to abandon phones and use glasses as their main connection tool?

Imagina andar com essa tralha na rua? No dia a dia não é nada funcional. Se com os celulares comuns já tem acidentes, imagina todo mundo com esse óculos, tirando a pessoa da realidade e desviando a atenção, não vai dar certo não.
Nada a ver prefiro meu bom e melhor smartphone!
